Jiangsu Provincial Reproductive Medicine Laboratory, the predecessor of the State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, was approved by the Department of Education of Jiangsu Province in 1996, established based on Nanjing Medical University (NMU) in 1997. In 2003, 2005, and 2008, it was approved as the national key laboratory cultivation candidate site jointly founded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and Jiangsu Province, Jiangsu National Key Laboratory Cultivation and Construction Site, and Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine of the National Population and Family Planning Commission. In March 2011, the MOST approved the establishment of a national key laboratory, which was successfully accepted by the MOST in 2013 and passed the first evaluation with excellent performances in 2016. The first director of the laboratory was Professor Sha Jiahao; the incumbent director is Professor Hu Zhibin; the director of the academic committee is Academician Meng Anming of Tsinghua University.
Based on the strategic demand of reproductive health in China, the laboratory has focused on key scientific issues in the field of human reproduction, adhered to the historical heritage of 3 spherical philosophy of “basic-be preventive-bedside” trinity, and continuously improved the development layout with clear research direction over the years. Centered on the main track of “Reproductive Process and Major Diseases”, it has conducted systematic and innovative research in the following 4 mainstay directions: ① Molecular mechanism of gametogenesis; ② Environmental/genetic factors and reproductive health; ③ Diagnosis and treatment of infertility and reproductive health; ④ Reproductive origin of major diseases. It focuses on the key regulatory network of human gametogenesis, and the influence of genetic-environment interaction on gametogenesis and early embryonic development; assesses the maternal and infant health outcomes of assisted reproduction, optimizes the diagnosis and treatment of infertility; explores gamete-mediated transmission/transgenerational effects and the mechanism of gamete/embryonic origin of major diseases based on large-scale population resources.
Around the main research directions, the laboratory has established a sound platform for analyzing and tracking of reproductive cell development morphology, a reproductive-related protein regulatory network analysis platform, a reproductive genome and genetics analysis platform, and a reproductive health environmental exposure and metabolism analysis platform. It has a clinical reproductive diagnosis and treatment center sized at nearly 10,000 m2, and dedicated area inside the laboratory for model animal breeding and gene editing. It has taken the lead in undertaking the construction of the China National Birth Cohort (CNBC), built a cloud information platform with independent intellectual property rights, and established a complete cohort implementation standard, operation specification and high-standard sample resource database.
