Forensic Medicine, the branch of medicine that interprets and establishes the medical facts in civil or criminal law cases, is also called legal medicine or medical jurisprudence, which applies medical facts to legal problems.

Nanjing Medical University Department of Medical Jurisprudence was founded in 1953, restoring the department’s independent establishment in 1981. The Department of Medical Jurisprudence was established in July 2005.
In June 2002, Judicial Forensic Institution of Nanjing Medical University was established, and went to publicity throughout the country by the Supreme People's Court.
In 2003, it founded a six-year educational system for double degree of both medicine and law, jointly with the Nanjing Normal University School of Law.
In March 2005, Jiangsu Women’s Injury Assessment Center” was founded.
In October 2009, it formally got approved by the inspection body and laboratory accreditation body in the forensic industry.
At the end of 2009, the Ministry of Justice officially approved us as the national forensic clinical continuing education training base and advanced group of the national judicial appraisal.
In the last 60 years, we have consistently adhered to the combination of theory and practice, combination of basics and application, and combination of clinics and prosecution cases.
While conducting both teaching and research, we undertake more than ten thousand cases of forensic work, and have held eight national forensic science professional refresher courses and graduate classes to train a large number of professional forensic backbones.
Department of Medical Jurisprudence, by utilizing its scientific platform and talent, has forensic staff team of comprehensive quality with a strong technical force and reasonable distribution of disciplines. It accepts entrustment from organizations or individuals.
It mainly engage in the case of the forensic pathology (such as the cause of death, injuries relations), forensic clinical, forensic evidence examination (such as paternity testing, individual identification).
