NMU Signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Medical University of Vienna

On the morning of September 18, 2024, Nanjing Medical University (NMU) hosted a ceremony to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Inter-University Cooperation with the Medical University of Vienna. Notable participants included Professor Markus Müller, President of the Medical University of Vienna; Vice Presidents for International Relations and Finance, Professors Michaela Fritz and Volkan Talazoglu; and Professor Li Shuren. Representing NMU were Vice Presidents Feng Feng and Xia Yankai; Wang Shukui, Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Nanjing First Hospital Committee; and Wang Feng, Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine. Liu Jiyong, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange. The event was chaired by Professor Chen Yun from NMU’s Office of International Cooperation and Exchange.

Vice President Feng Feng of Nanjing Medical University opened the ceremony by extending a warm welcome to the

delegation from the Medical University of Vienna. He highlighted the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding as a promising step towards deeper cooperation between the two institutions. He expressed enthusiasm for collaborative efforts in scientific research within the medical field, as well as in training undergraduate and graduate students and other academic endeavors, all aimed at mutual development and progress. This initiative marks a significant commitment to advancing medical education and research through international partnerships.

Professor Markus Müller, President of the Medical University of Vienna, introduced the key development milestones and scientific achievements of his institution during his speech. He emphasized the importance of strengthening international collaborations and exchanges to cultivate global health awareness and a sense of responsibility among students. Professor Müller pledged to enhance cooperation further, aiming to drive reforms in medical education that address the future demands of the healthcare industry and rise to upcoming challenges. This approach underlines the university’s proactive commitment to adapting to global health trends and preparing its students for a dynamic future.

Professor Michaela Fritz, the Vice-Rector for External Affairs at the Medical University of Vienna, shared her experiences in medical education and research. She expressed her excitement and eagerness for future collaborations. Her discussions focused on potential joint initiatives and projects that could benefit both her university and its international partners. This reflects a strategic effort to enhance the university's global engagement and influence in the field of medical sciences.

Secretary Wang Shukui of the CPC Nanjing First Hospital Committee provided an overview of the hospital’s rich history and its accomplishments in scientific research, education, and international collaboration. He highlighted the hospital’s partnerships with various international research institutions, emphasizing its commitment to delivering high-quality medical services. Secretary Wang expressed a strong desire to enhance joint research and innovation collaborations, aiming to further elevate the hospital’s capabilities and contribute to global health advancements. These initiatives not only strengthen the hospital’s international ties but also improve healthcare outcomes through shared knowledge and resources.

Professor Chen Yun from Nanjing Medical University detailed the university’s development journey and its strengths and achievements in medical research and education. She emphasized the importance of collaboration with prestigious universities worldwide, underscoring how such partnerships enhance the educational environment and foster innovation. Professor Chen conveyed that students and staff are not only recipients of knowledge but are also vital contributors to the future healthcare system. By engaging actively in these international collaborations, they gain valuable insights and experiences that prepare them to make significant contributions to global healthcare.

 

After the meeting, participants from both universities gathered for a group photo to commemorate the occasion. Following this, professors from the Medical University of Vienna toured the NMU campus. This visit allowed them to gain deeper insights into NMU’s educational environment, academic structure, and research facilities. Such interactions are invaluable for enhancing mutual understanding and fostering future collaborations between the two institutions, enriching the academic and cultural exchanges that drive innovation and development in the medical sciences.

 

The successful organization of this event not only laid a foundation for cooperation between Nanjing Medical University and the Medical University of Vienna but also opened new opportunities for both institutions in scientific research, talent cultivation, and academic exchanges in medicine. By strengthening collaboration with renowned global institutions, NMU aims to enhance its international competitiveness.
