Directly subordinate to Nanjing Medical University, the Animal Core Facility of Nanjing Medical University (Jiangsu Animal Experimental Center of Medical & Pharmaceutical Research, or Jiangsu Laboratory Animal Center, hereinafter referred to as “the Center”) is a service platform for sharing of laboratory technology resources regarding laboratory animals and medical animals in Jiangsu Province.
Structured with 2 administrative units and 4 business units (namely the General Office, Quality Assurance Office, Production Department, Breeding Department, Project Technology Department and Training Department), the Center boasts such facilities as the Experimental Zoology Teaching and Research Section, University-level Key Laboratory for Medical Animals, Transgenic Research Platform, Phenotypic Analysis Platform, Molecular Imaging and Clinical Research Platform, and it is also an important part of the State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine. With its principal body located in Jiangning Campus of the University, the Center also maintains its branch located in Emeiling Campus, Hanzhong Road, Gulou District (the Center’s former premises. The branch now mainly services the scientific research work of the affiliated hospitals nearby. The Center now has more than 100 faculty and staff members, including scientific research and technical personnel, breed conservators, breeders and facility maintenance personnel.
The Center is equipped with fixed assets valued RMB 300 million, including small animal MRI, small animal Micro-CT, in vivo imaging system, high frequency Doppler ultrasound and TSE IntelliCage system. With a total construction area of 30,000 square meters, the Center can achieve a yearly supplying capacity of 300,000 rats or mice annually, yearly breeding capacity of 30,000 cages of rats, mice or hamsters in experimental barrier environment, breeding capacity of 1,000 cages of tree shrews, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, monkeys or pigs in general experimental environment. The Center provides academic research services to around 500 customers and scores nearly 4,000 projects each year. Its project and technology services is accessible and shared with other colleges and universities, scientific research institutes and pharmaceutical enterprises in Jiangsu Province. Among all medical colleges and universities in China, the Center has already developed into one of the largest modern animal medical experiment platforms integrated with reproduction & supply, feeding, model building, phenotype analysis, teaching & training and scientific research on experimental animals. Upholding the humanistic spirits of “Sincerity, Caring, Truth Seeking and Dedication”, the Center not only effectively accommodates the needs of various medical scientific researches and medical teaching modes in Nanjing Medical University, but also actively reach out to serve other relevant universities, research institutes and medical enterprises based in Nanjing, or even inside and outside Jiangsu Province. It also undertakes extensive cooperation at home and abroad, so to continuously improving and give full play to the important contribution from the laboratory animal science to medical talent development, life science and medical research.
