In recent years, with the emergence of “precision medicine”, “big data”, “artificial intelligence” and other concepts, computer-based medical image processing and various imaging technologies have seen leap-forward advancements with each passing day. The minimally invasive intervention techniques have received more extensive utilization. With rapid development, medical imaging has become an indispensable and essential supporting discipline to clinical medicine. The medical imaging program of our school has a long history, solid strength, and well-established system. It started to enroll undergraduate student in 1994. To speed up the medical imaging talents training, disciplinary construction and better serve “Healthy China” and “Healthy Jiangsu” initiatives, NMU established the School of Medical Imaging in March 2018. Currently, the school enrolls about 100 and 480 students every year into two programs: medical imaging and medical imaging technology. In 2021, the medical imaging program was selected as a national first-class specialty construction candidate.
There are 5 subordinate departments in the school, including diagnostic imaging department, interventional radiology department, ultrasound medicine department, nuclear medicine department and imaging technology department. The school has Ph.D degree programs on in imaging medicine and isotopic medicine. In 2019, its medical imaging technology, as a sub-specialty in medical technology, was approved as a level 1 Ph.D degree program. The school is also the home to the Jiangsu Provincial Medical Imaging Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the Medical Imaging Technology Laboratory, the Artificial Intelligence Imaging Laboratory, and the Molecular Imaging Laboratory. In 2020, the Medical Imaging was approved as a first-class course and online course in Jiangsu Province. With 3 directly affiliated hospitals as the core, 20 non-affiliated hospitals as the backbone, and 50 teaching hospitals as the support, this program is the largest and most comprehensive medical imaging teaching base in Jiangsu. Among the strong faculty resources of the School, there are 41 Ph.D supervisors in imaging medicine and isotopic medicine, 167 master supervisors, including 1 recipient of the NSFC Excellent Young Scholars Fund. All of the faculties are supported by the affiliated hospitals. In the past three years, the School of Medical Imaging has published more than 100 SCI-indexed papers and over 250 papers in Chinese top-line journals. As project leaders, teachers at the school have undertaken 20 NSFC projects, 17 provincial and ministerial projects, respectively; 2 projects under the Jiangsu Medical Leading Talents Program, 2 projects under the Jiangsu Medical Key Talents Program; published 4 academic monographs as editor-in-chief, and participated in the compilation of 5 academic monographs.
As a young school, we will uphold the spirit of the motto of “Learning for clear reflection, promoting virtue and imaging” guided by the goal of cultivating “Be erudite, probe to tell the difference, respect ethic, develop medical imaging cause” and insist on “integrating school and hospital, hybridize the medicine and engineering”. On the basis of NMU, we will integrate medical imaging resources of affiliated hospitals, create the highest level in medical imaging disciplines, play a leading role in the domestic demonstration, and offer a talent and intelligent platform for serving Healthy Jiangsu and Healthy China.
