The School of Stomatology, Nanjing Medical University (NMU), and the Affiliated Stomatology Hospital(Jiangsu Province Stomatological Hospital), can be dated back to the Specialty of Stomatology, Department of Medicine, Jiangsu New Medical College.In 1974,it established an independent Department of Stomatology, which was upgraded to the School of Stomatology in 1993, one of the earliest stomatology schools in China.The school has 5 departments: Department of Oral Medicine, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Prosthodontics, Department of Orthodontics, and Department of Basic Orthodontics. It was rated B+ grade (top 10-20%) in the 4thround of national stomatology evaluation.In 2021, it ranked 5th in the Best Chinese Universities Rankings—Stomatology Specialty and 5thin Chinese UniversityUndergraduate Education Rankings-Stomatology Specialty.
In the hospital, there are 771 staff, 139 of whom are with senior professional titles, 67 master supervisors, and 18 Ph.D. supervisors; 64 person/times serving as the expert panel member in CSA, 25 person/times receiving the China State Council Special Allowances, “Jiagnsu Distinguished Young and Middle-aged Experts Awards”, Jiangsu Leadership Medical Talent Award, Jiagnsu Distinguished Yaouth Scholar Fund and other awards at or above Jiangsu province level.
As the only strength discipline of the same kind in Jiangsu Province, the stomatology is structured with a post-doctoral research station, level 1 discipline Ph.D degree program and specialty Ph.D program.The school has the Jiangsu Province Stomatology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and the domestic leading simulation head model laboratory. It is the first “National Physician Qualification Examination Practice Skills Examination and Examiner Training Base”(Stomatology), the provincial demonstration clinical base for stomatological GP training in Jiangsu province, and also one of the first national standardized residency training bases.Most of the stomatologists, deans, directors and academic leaders of oral medical institutions in Jiangsu Province with a bachelor degree or above have been trained here. The outstanding alumnus Professor Wang Cunyu was elected as the first Chinese memberof the US National Academy of Medicine and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Its stomatology program has been approved as a state-level first-class undergraduate specialty program and brandedspecialty in Jiangsu Province; it established a national-provincial-university-school first-class curriculum system;and was included in the first batch of four national first-class courses. It has established the first domestic virtual simulation resource network platform for stomatologymedical education and formed a high-quality teaching resource co-construction and sharing alliance operation model; it was also the winner to theSecond Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award and the First Prize of the Teaching Achievement Award in Jiangsu Province.
The hospital has established Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Oral Disease Research and Jiangsu Oral Translational Medicine Engineering Research Center; it has undertaken more than 180 projects of various levels and types in the recent 5 years, including 48 key projects under NSFC; the hospital authored 797 papers, 349 of which SCI-indexed; it also obtained 35 patents and 21 awards such as the Second Prize of the Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award by the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Second Prize of Natural Science Award of the MoE, and the Second Prize of Jiangsu Science and Technology Award; it sponsored the journals Stomatology and Oral Biomedicine, which are both core science and technologyjournals in China.
The schoolhighly values international exchanges and cooperation. It has established long-term cooperation with well-known universities such as the University of Hong Kong School of Dentistry, University of Illinois at Chicago, Aarhus University in Denmark, and Aalborg University to offer international courses in stomatology.Through cooperative education programs and tapping into each other’s complementary strengths, the school has cultivated outstanding stomatology professionals with broadened international perspective. Adhering to the motto of “Respect for People, Dedication to Work, Exquisite Skills, and Complete Sincerity”, the school is committed to spare no efforts developing itself into a domestically leading, distinctive featured research and teaching school of stomatology.
