Ever since its establishment in 1934, the Provincial Medical College of Jiangsu, the predecessor of Nanjing Medical University (NMU), had already started its public health education. It was one of the first institutions that provided public health and preventive medicine education in China. In 1940, the Public Health Teaching and Research Section was established. In 1953, the public health program started to enroll undergraduates. In 1995, the Department of Preventive Medicine was renamed the School of Public Health. The school has level 1 discipline Ph.D program for “Public Health and Preventive Medicine”, Public Health (MPH) master degree program, and post-doctoral research mobile station; national key discipline “Labor Hygiene and Environmental Hygiene”, Jiangsu provincial advantageous discipline “Public Health and Preventive Medicine” and provincial key disciplines “Hygiene Toxicology” and “Epidemiology and Health Statistics”. Its preventive medicine is a state-level first-class undergraduate specialty program, a national-level featured specialty, and a branded specialty in Jiangsu Province. The “Public Health and Preventive Medicine” was rated A+ grade in the 4th round of national level 1 discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education.
The school has 12 departments, 7 centers and 1 platform: namely, the Department of Epidemiology, Department of Biostatistics, Department of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Hygiene, Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Department of Child and Adolescent Hygiene and Maternal and Child Health, Department of Health Toxicology, Department of Health Inspection and Quarantine, Department of Social Medicine and Health Education, Department of Health Informatics, Department of Health Management, Department of Microbiology and Infection, Department of Mental Hygiene, Preventive Medicine Experimental Teaching Center, Public Health Teaching and Research Center, Birth Cohort Research Center, Environment and Human Health International Joint Research Center, Global Health Center, Jiangsu Province Medical Pesticide Veterinary Drug Safety Evaluation and Research Center, Public Health Emergency Consultation Service and Research Center, and Scientific Research Sharing Platform. Currently, there are 226 faculty members (including 58 employees), 116 of whom are full-time faculties, including 44 full professors/research fellows and 33 associate professors/associate research fellows; 37 Ph.D. supervisors and 25 master supervisors; 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), 6 experts receiving the China State Council Special Government Allowance, 1 national-level famous teacher, 1 Jiangsu provincial-level famous teacher, 2 recipients of China national “New Century Talent Project”, 2 experts included in the “New Century Talent Support Program” by the Ministry of Education (MOE), 4 recipients of the NSFC Distinguished Youth Scholar Fund, 6 recipients of NSFC Excellent Youth Scholar Fund, 1 “Young and Middle-aged Leading Talent in Science and Technology Innovation” by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and 11 recipients of other national high-level talent awards.
It has been included in the construction campaign of national-level first-class specialties and high-level applied public health talent innovation training project. The school has a national level faculty team and a national experimental teaching demonstration center for preventive medicine. It was the winner to the Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award and the First Prize of the first National Excellent Textbook. Its courses were approved the national first-class courses, national curriculum ideological and political demonstration courses, national quality resource sharing courses, national quality online open course. The school took the lead in developing public health PBL education in China; advocated and sponsored the first National College Student Comprehensive Public Health Skills Competition; won numerous awards in national competitions such as the “Challenge Cup” and “Creating Youth”, and the Gold Medal of the Preventive Medicine Track in the China College Student Medical Technology Skills Competition.
The school offers 3 undergraduate programs: namely the preventive medicine (medicine), health inspection and quarantine (science), applied statistics (biostatistics, science); its postgraduate education program covers all secondary disciplines. The school has more than 1,600 students of various types and has formed a multi-disciplinary and multi-level talent education system that is focused on preventive medicine and supported by coordinated development of other related specialties.
