The history of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Nanjing Medical University (NMU) can be dated back to 1934, the earliest years after the founding of the university. Back then, many medical courses were already opened, including Human Anatomy, Pharmacology, Bacteriology, Parasitology, Pathological Anatomy, Forensic Medicine and Medical History.
In the 4th round of national discipline appraisal in 2016, the Level 1 discipline of basic medicine was appraised with Grade B+.
Now in the school, there are 341 working staff, 235 of whom are faculties and full-time research fellows, including 66 full professors and 61 associate professors. The school is structured with 13 subordinate departments, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center (basic medicine), 1 national virtual simulation experiment teaching center (basic medicine), 1 analysis and testing center, and 4 administration functions.
The school undertakes the basic teaching tasks for undergraduates, postgraduates, and continuing education students of the entire university, lecturing over 40 undergraduate courses and conducts around 40,000 teaching hours every year. The school is joined with 1 national model teacher, 2 national-level teaching teams, and 1 excellent teaching team of “Qing Lan Project” of Jiangsu-based Higher Institutions; 3 national quality courses, 1 national bilingual teaching demonstration course, 2 national quality resource sharing courses, and 1 national brand course for international students studying in China, 1 state-level first-class undergraduate course, 7 provincial first-rate undergraduate courses, 10 provincial English-delivered quality courses; “Human Anatomy” has been awarded as an ideological and political demonstration course in Jiangsu universities. In the past five years, faculties of the school have won 1 Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award; compiled 1 textbook as editor-in-chief (winner of the Second Prize of the First National Teaching Material Award) and compiled 2 textbooks as the associate editor-in-chief; 1 provincial teaching achievement award; chaired over 90 teaching reform projects of different levels; authored over 220 teaching publications; edited more than 90 textbooks, including over 10 state-programmed textbooks; participated in various teaching competitions and instructed students to participate in domestic and foreign competitions with excellent results achieved.
The school has made remarkable achievements in the research directions including reproductive health, cardiovascular diseases, neuro-degenerative diseases, metabolic diseases, infectious diseases and immunity, and tumors. In the past 5 years, the school has won 200 state-level projects with a total research funding of RMB 182.68 million.
The school has established 2 undergraduate programs, namely the basic medicine and forensic medicine, enrolling 70 undergraduates every year. There are 490 full-time postgraduates at the school, including 115 Ph.D. students and 375 master students. The school also receives domestic and foreign visiting scholars and trainees. It has entered into long-term partnerships with universities and research institutes in the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Austria, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and other countries and regions, creating an excellent external environment for the long-term development of the school.
