Record High Number of NSFC Projects Granted to NMU in 2021

As publicly noticed in the winning projects announcement of NSFC for year 2021, 305 projects submitted from NMU were granted funding support, with the cumulative direct grant add up to RMB 139.25 million. Among these projects, there are 1 Innovative Research Cluster Project, 1 NSFC Distinguished Young Scholar project, 1 NSFC Excellent Youth Scholar project, 2 key projects, 1 key international (regional) cooperative research project, 1 specially designated project, 131 general projects and 167 youth scholar projects. The number of funded projects rank 3rd among colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province. It’s also top-ranking among the independently-formed medical universities and ranking 26th among 2,364 supporting units across China.

Even though the number of project funding application filed by NMU is at par with that of the previous year, the project application acceptance rate climbed by 11.3% over the basis of last year. Among the projects, the number of approved youth-scholar-fund projects increased by 26.5% YoY, thanks to the significant progress which the young researchers have made in the fields of basic research. The first affiliated hospital to NMU has submitted a total of 498 projects, 103 of which were granted funding supports. This made NMU the first-ranking, amid all university affiliated hospitals, in terms of approved project numbers and direct funding size.

As the best carrier of scientific innovation for basic research, National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) is the important barometer to tell the strength of endorsement unit on basic research. It is also one of the key channels to get government grants for scientific research. Recently our university follows the high-quality development philosophy, encourages the original innovation from “0” to “1”, and gives full play to the important supporting and leading roles of natural science foundations in improving NMU’s basic research level, talent cultivation, team structuring, disciplinary construction and major achievements facilitation.
