Department Introduction:
Structured by NMU as the administrative functions, the Department of Science and Technology, along with the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences, work to organize, manage, service and perform risk control for the academic research and related activities output from the academic research institutions, from the foreign scientific and technological cooperation programs, from scientific research development strategies and from the policy research, promoting the reform of scientific research systems and mechanisms at NMU. The principal objectives of institutional establishments are: to promote technological innovation, facilitate interdisciplinary integration, and comprehensively enhance the scientific and technological strength, talent training quality, and NMU’s capabilities in facilitating social and economic development.
The Department of Science and Technology and the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences are structured with the General Office, the Project Management Section, the Basic Research and Achievement Section, and the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences. Their main functions include:
1. Manage government-sponsored research projects supported by natural science research grants at the national, provincial, ministerial, municipal, and university levels, facilitate academic exchanges, conduct academic integrity construction, etc.
2. Scientific research innovation platform, collaborative innovation, rewards application for achievement, publications, patents, industry-university-research cooperation, academic achievement commercialization, technology transfer, and management of business-sponsored research projects.
3. Management of government-sponsored research projects and research grants for humanities and social science at national, provincial, ministerial, municipal, and university levels, rewards application for academic achievement in humanities and publications, management of platforms.
4. Science and technology statistics, university science and technology association, academic committee, ethics review and other work.
5. Complete other tasks designated by the university leaders and superior authorities.

Overview of Scientific Research at NMU:
NMU now has 1 state key laboratory, 1 state-level international joint research center, 1 provincial/ministerial collaborative innovation center, 29 ministerial and provincial key laboratories (engineering centers, think tanks), and 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers; NMU is the home to the Institute of Healthy Jiangsu Development, the only provincial health policy think tank (cultivation) in Jiangsu Province, and Jiangsu Translational Medicine Research Institute, the only translational medicine research institution in Jiangsu province.
Since the initiation of the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”, NMU has been continuously gearing up its scientific research level and been granted with over RMB 1 billion funding from various scientific and technological projects. NMU also has been the leading institution in undertaking 9 national key research and development projects and 29 research programs, 58 key/major projects under the NSFC, 1,364 general programs and NSFC Distinguished/Excellent Young Scholar projects, 7 NSSFC projects, and 15 Jiangsu Social Science Foundation projects. The University is now added with 2 NSFC Distinguished Young Scholars laureates, 10 NSFC Excellent Scholars laureates, 11 Jiangsu Distinguished Young Scholars laureates and 11 Jiangsu Excellent Scholars laureates, 2 Jiangsu Higher Education Scientific and Technological Innovation Teams, and 1 Jiangsu Philosophy and Social Science Innovation Team.
