The Opening ceremony for 2016 freshmen was held in the stadium of Nanjing Medical University on the morning of September 6, 2016. University leaders Chen Qi, Shen Hongbing, Zhou Yafu, Shi Jinlou, Xia Youbing, Wang Ruixin, Lu Xiang, Wang Lin, Li Jianqing, Ma Shuiqing, Tang Jinhai, directors from administrative departments and schools, representatives of teachers and all the newly-enrolled undergraduate, graduate and overseas students participated in the ceremony. Wang Ruixin, Vice President of Nanjing Medical University, hosted the opening ceremony.
The majestic national anthem kicked off the opening ceremony. Wang Lin, Vice President of Nanjing Medical University, announced the decision to award scholarships to 2016 newly-enrolled students. University leaders presented the award to them. Xu Lu, an outstanding graduate from NMU, a member of the champion team of the first session of clinical skill competition among medical students from national medical universities, and a surgeon of Breast Surgery Department at the First Affiliated Hospital of NMU, led all the newcomers to pledge the Oath of Medical Students.
Representatives of the new undergraduate, overseas and graduate students, as well as senior students, made speeches in the ceremony. They were respectively Zhang Xin, a scholarship holder and a student of the 5-plus-3-year joint program of the School of Basic Medical Sciences and First School of Clinical Medicine, Sapna Panday, a graduate from the School of International Education, Xia Wenjie, a doctoral student in oncology from the Fourth School of Clinical Medicine, and Peng Yunpeng, a doctoral student in surgery from the First School of Clinical Medicine. Professor Lv Ling from the First School of Clinical Medicine, as the representative of teachers, expected the students to set up aims and directions, ignite the passion of youth to make dreams come true and contribute to relieving human’s pain and illnesses.
On behalf of Nanjing Medical University, President Shen Hongbing expressed heartfelt congratulations and warm welcome to all the new students. In his speech titled Enrichment Makes Growth, President Shen expected that students can enrich themselves step by step, spur with long-term accumulation, stay true to the original self, and avoid conceit and impetuosity. Students should make prudent plans while fully recognize themselves, disseminate love with actions rather than words, thus living a fruitful and splendid life every day.
The opening ceremony ended with the university anthem. After the ceremony, Chen Qi, Party Secretary of Nanjing Medical University, gave the students the first lecture titled Forge Ahead with Determination and Set Sail with Dreams. In perspectives of the origin of university, function of medicine, impression of NMU and the Four Pillars of Learning, Chen Qi hoped that the newly-enrolled students should learn to know, learn to do, learn to live together and learn to be, thereby creating brilliant lives in the great undertakings of realizing Chinese dreams.
