Nobel Laureate Professor Barry Marshall Visits NMU

Professor Barry Marshall, a Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, led a team of four members to visit Nanjing Medical University on May 17, 2016. NMU leaders Shen Hongbing and Li Qianqing received the distinguished guests in Jiangning campus. Directors of the Department of Science & Technology and International Cooperation & Exchange Office participated in the reception.

On behalf of Nanjing Medical University, President Shen Hongbing extended a warm welcome to Professor Barry Marshall and introduced the basic situations of NMU. Marshall introduced the Nanjing Marshall Helicobacter pylori Research Co., Ltd. named after him and expressed his interest to cooperate with Nanjing Medical University. Two parties exchanged their ideas on teaching, scientific research, technological transfer, etc.

Professor Marshall visited the Animal Core Facility for Medicine and Pharmacy and the library. He inquired the details about the scientific research and service activities of the animal facility.

Professor Marshall is a faculty member of the University of Western Australia. He was elected a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in December 2011. In 2005, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Marshall and Robin Warren, his long-time collaborator, for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
