Two experts from Mayo Clinic paid a visit to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University on the afternoon of May 17, 2016. They were Dr. Annette B. Roter, director of Leadership Office in Mayo Clinic, and Nicole Van Ert, assistant to the president of La Crosse Medical Center affiliated with Mayo Clinic in Wisconsin. Leaders of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, namely Ji Guozhong, Wen Hao, Gan Weihua, Zhang Qi, received the US experts. Two sides introduced the history, development and current situation of each institution. The US experts explained the structure, strategy and international perspective of Mayo Clinic.
Two experts gave lectures in the afternoon. The themes were individually Three Shields: Clinical, Education and Research, and Quality. Both lectures were simultaneously interpreted. All seats of auditorium were occupied. Nearly 100 physicians and administrative staff attended the lectures.
Nicole Van Ert’s topic was Three Shields: Clinical, Education and Research. Firstly, she introduced the founding history of Mayo Clinic by William Worrall Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota in 1864. Secondly, she elaborated on Mayo’s values, mission and vision. Its primary value is that the need of the patient comes first. The core value statements are eight words, namely respect, compassion, integrity, healing, teamwork, excellence, innovation, stewardship. The mission is to inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research. The vision is that Mayo Clinic will provide an unparalleled experience as the most trusted partner for health care. Thirdly, she explained the structure of Mayo Clinic, which is mainly distributed in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Georgia. Lastly, Nicole set forth three shields, which are the connotations of its badge. The core part is clinical shield while the education and research shields advancing forward. Mayo Clinic devotes $554 million per year to research. The average number of publications over the course of a physician’s career is nearly 70 peer-reviewed scholarly articles.
Then Dr. Annette B. Roter gave a lecture on Quality. She firstly put forward the formula of quality: Quality = Outcome+Safety+Service. Quality is everyone’s responsibility. Even a cleaner in the hospital can acquire his/her sense of job value, realizing that each individual is one of the key members in the process of ensuring quality. Secondly, she introduced current leadership of Mayo Clinic, which is composed of a physician leader and an administrative leader, namely Dr. John Noseworthy and Jeff Bolton. The longest term of office for the physician leader is eight years. There is no time boundary for the administrative leader. Considering the large and complex scale, Mayo Clinic emphasizes teamwork. Leaders will make decisions slowly and carefully. When a decision is made, leadership will move quickly. Thirdly, the role of a Mayo administrator is institutionally oriented. Mayo promotes a holistic perspective, provides job fulfillment, career advancement opportunities and training. Periodic rotations are designed for administrative staff to broaden their horizons and career depth. Dr. Roter holds the view that an effective administrator should have such characteristics as humility, the spirit of teamwork, the ability to understand the ever changing people and situations, sense of humor, sense of timing, treating all with impartial fairness, tolerance of ambiguity, tact, patience, diplomacy and prestige. At last, Dr. Roter made a brief introduction about MBTI and DiSC tests.
After the lectures, the leaders of the Second Affiliated Hospital and the US experts exchanged gifts.
