On Jan 9, the Chinese government presented the 2014 State scientific and technological awards in the Great Hall of the people. Prof. Kong Xiangqing, Dean of the First School of Clinical Medicine, won the second prize for the program “new equipment and new technology of ventricular septal defect intervention”.
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is the biggest threat to the children’s health, and is also one of the most serious heart diseases for the adult. Prof.Kong’s research team not only firstly invented symmetric ventricular septal occluders and biological ceramic occluders in the world, which are applied to the minimally invasive treatment, but also established the clinical requirement of the apparatus. Thus, the minimally invasive treatment of VSD has been widely applied to the clinic. Because of those achievements, a new treating method of VSD which is simple, minimally invasive and effective was provided for the VSD patients. And China has been the pioneer in the field of minimally invasive treatment of VSD.
The program won two invention patents in USA, one in European Union and six in China. It also won two certificates of medical device in USA, one CE certificate in European Union, three certificates of medical device in China and nineteen in other countries.
