On the morning of February 14th, the Nanjing Medical University work conference was held on the fifth floor of the Wutai campus library, at which the major government tasks for 2014 were set in motion. The conference was attended by more than 300 people, including university leaders, retired staff members, leaders of democratic parties, senior administrators and teachers, party secretaries, department directors and student instructors.
At the conference,Chen Qi, party secretary and President of Nanjing Medical University, reviewed and summarized the university’s achievements in 2013 and then gave a comprehensive outline of the university’s new course of development and the new tasks involved, thereby setting in motion the major government tasks for 2014. He pointed out that 2013 had witnessed a number of noticeable achievements in areas such as establishing a work ethic, enriching the university’s culture and building a pleasant campus. He then talked about the need to further understand and implement in 2014 the essence of what was discussed at the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee and in a series of speeches delivered by President Jinping Xi. This, he said, requires focus on three key points - reform, innovation and hard work, full awareness of the new situations and opportunities NMU will face in its development and a push for improvements in our profession. He said that in the new year, NMU should continue its work in carrying out extensive reforms, aid development with innovation and reach accomplishment in our undertakings through hard work. The following are the eight key tasks for 2014 outlined by President Chen:
1. Guided by the principles of the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee and the Sixth Plenary Session of the 12th Jiangsu Provincial People’s Congress (PPC), we shall carry out extensive reforms to stimulate activity and give life to development at the university.
2. We shall build a new platform for development and seize opportunities for collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the National Health and Family Planning Comission and the Jiangsu Provincial Government in the area of university construction.
3. We shall adopt an educational philosophy which places the teaching of people at its core, putting moral education at the forefront, emphasizing people’s abilities and promoting all-round development, so as to nurture high-quality students.
4. We shall be innovative with science and technology and effective in the construction of new disciplines. We shall also increase efforts to improve the quality of our staff, so as to raise the university’s competitive edge.
5. We shall enhance our strategy to improve clinical skills and strengthen the ties between the university and its affiliated hospitals, thereby increasing the university’s capacity to aid society.
6. We shall organize the relocation of our teaching center to Jiangning Campus and hold various activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of NMU.
7. We shall continue to promote the construction of a positive campus environment and continue striving to balance the university’s rating for academic performance with that for overall satisfaction. This will thereby increase the ratings by staff and students of how happy they are at NMU.
8. We shall improve the party in a more scientific way, which means to pursue development through first improving our party, and bettering our university, our teaching and our education by first bettering the party, that is, to lay a solid political and organizational foundation for the development of NMU.
Finally, President Chen urged every department to learn from and share what was discussed at the conference, to fulfill departmental tasks and to promote reform through innovation, so as to ensure that the work of the university is completed smoothly.
