The NMU School of Public Health (SPH) traces its root to the Department of Public Health in 1934 at Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Medical Affairs, one of the institutions initially providing professional training programs in public health and preventive medicine in China. The Teaching and Research Office of Public Health was established in 1940. In 1953, the department started enrolling undergraduates in the Public Health program. Hence was renamed the School of Public Health in 1995.
Today, the school offers doctoral, master and bachelor degrees, training professionals in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at different levels. At present, the school has an enrollment of near 1300 degree candidates, including 783 undergraduates, 317 graduates, 272 part-time and 19 international MPH students. In addition, the school has bee n constantly devoted to scientific researches, discipline construction and development of students' humanistic quality. The discipline of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in our school ranks A+ in the fourth-round national first- Level discipline of the overall rankings announced by Ministry of Education.
The school houses 8 departments (Department of Epidemiology, Department of Biostatistics, Department of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Department of Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, Department of Toxicology, Department of Hygienic Analysis and Detection, Department Of Social Medicine and Health Education), 7 research centers (the Experimental Teaching Center of Preventive Medicine, the Public Health Teaching Research Center, China National Birth Cohort Research Center, China International Cooperation Center for Environment and Human Health, NMU Center for Global Health, The Hyginic Analysis and Detection Center, and the Public Health Emergency Consultation & Research Center) and Core Facilities. The school is composed of 150 faculty and staff members,Thus 30 professors, 31 associate professors and36 lecturers. In this high-quality and energetic team, there are 27 doctorial supervisors and 23 master supervisors.
The school attaches importance to leaping development in both education and scientific researches, and generally extensive implements scientific and technological services, gradually forming its characteristics of emphasizing the integration of basic disciplines and coordinated development of education, research and service.
