The first rays of sunlight in the new year shine upon the banks of Tianyuan Lake, warm and comforting. At this moment, on behalf of Nanjing Medical University（NMU）,we would like to extend our New Year greetings and best wishes to all the faculty and staff members, students, medical and nursing practitioners of our affiliated hospitals, retirees, and alumni both at home and abroad, and to friends from all sectors of society that have shown concern for the development of our university over the years.
Reflecting on the year 2023, we come to realize that what may have initially seemed like an ordinary year was actually a year brimming with extraordinary achievements and the fostering of aspirations. We dedicated ourselves to thoroughly studying and implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, as well as embracing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. We remained committed to the integration of moral education and talent cultivation, while also emphasizing the importance of Party building in the development of our university. As a result, we have made significant progress in advancing the "Double First-Class" medical university construction initiative.
Over the past year, we have made significant strides in meeting the general requirements for Party building. Our university has organized high-standard and quality thematic education activities to study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. These efforts have garnered extensive media coverage, with over 150 reports from outlets at provincial level and above, including Xinhua News Agency and The Guangming Daily. Notably, our "Heart Care" team has been recognized as the "Role Model of the Times" in Jiangsu Province. Additionally, we have successfully implemented construction plans for three-level Party organizations in colleges and universities, and completed the application for “the demonstration and quality improvement work of the Party building in higher education institutions in the new era”, as required by the Ministry of Education and the provincial Party committee's Educational Working Committee. Furthermore, we have initiated a new round of institutional reform and cadre adjustment, strengthening our Party building and political and ideological work team, and enhancing the university's governance efficiency. As a testament to our dedication, our university was honored with the National May 1 Labor Award Certificate in 2023. We have also achieved the First Class ranking in the Comprehensive Assessment of local colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, as well as an excellent rating in the assessment of the university leadership team for the fourth consecutive year.
Over the past year, we have placed great emphasis on connotation construction and have striven to showcase our strengths. Our university has anchored its efforts in the "Double First-Class" construction, aiming for excellence. We are proud to announce that we have successfully completed the mid-term summary of the 'Double First-Class' construction. In order to further enhance our capacity to cultivate outstanding innovative talents, we have restructured the curriculum system of the “Tianyuan” Excellence Class and “Tianyuan” Innovation Class; hence the "Tianyuan Honors School" has been founded. Through initiatives such as the "coordinated development of medical education, four-teaching linkage, and integration of undergraduate and postgraduate programs", we have explored new mechanisms for educational and teaching reform. We are delighted to share that our university has taken the lead in the "101 Plan" of the Ministry of Education in National Public Health and Preventive Medicine Professional Category, marking a new breakthrough in national-level teaching achievements. We have also made remarkable progress in attracting talent, with the addition of ten new national-level high-level talents, and the recruitment of 24 high-level talents. Furthermore, one of our teacher teams has been selected as a Huang Danian-style Teacher Team. In terms of scientific research, we have successfully completed the restructuring of the National Key Laboratory for Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, and a basic science center project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has been approved. Our total scientific research funding for the year has exceeded 200 million yuan. Our university has also made significant strides in discipline construction, with 13 disciplines being selected into the top 1% of ESI rankings and 2 disciplines entering the top 5%. It is worth mentioning that our university's comprehensive academic strength consistently ranks among the top three independent medical colleges in China in various renowned domestic and international university rankings.
Over the past year, we have successfully fulfilled our mission and made significant improvements in the quality of our services. On the one hand, we have focused on enhancing the overall campus experience by systematically carrying out the construction of happy and high-quality campuses. This includes initiating the first-phase construction of the Changzhou campus, making the student dormitory comprehensive building at the Wutai campus fully operational, and officially commencing the construction of the public health science and technology comprehensive building at the Jiangning campus. As a result of our efforts, we have proudly earned the esteemed title of "Green School" in Jiangsu. On the other hand, we have prioritized the well-being of our community by actively implementing the clinical enhancement strategy. We have strategically planned the development of affiliated hospitals with a "one hospital, one policy" approach. Additionally, we have been actively involved in the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and assumed rotating chairmanship of the Yangtze River Delta Medical Education Alliance. We have also collaborated with Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Taizhou, and Yangzhou to establish clinical medical colleges and political and research platforms and have strengthened the Suzhou innovation center and the Taizhou Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry Research Institute, providing support for the high-quality development of the medical and pharmaceutical industry in Jiangsu. In recognition of our efforts, our "Medical Education Going Westward" special action has received high praise from the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee, being described as "well done and very meaningful."
We express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have stood by our side, supporting us through thick and thin. It is your unwavering love, perseverance, and dedication that have propelled Nanjing Medical University forward. As we approach the university's 90th anniversary in 2024, we recognize that our journey ahead is vast and limitless. Our focus remains on achieving the "Double First-Class" construction goal, centered around higher medical education and the health and healthcare sectors. We are committed to tackling the crucial tasks of building first-class disciplines, establishing top-tier affiliated hospitals, and creating exceptional operational conditions. Through comprehensive efforts in talent development, scientific research, social service, and cultural guidance, we aim to drive the high-quality development of our university. By doing so, we will contribute significantly to the grand narrative of New Jiangsu's modernization and the realization of the Chinese Dream for the great rejuvenation of our nation.
