The First School of Clinical Medicine

Overview

    The First School of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University, formerly known as the Clinical Medicine Department of Nanjing Medical College, was established in 1934, along with the foundation of Jiangsu Medical Administration College (the predecessor of Nanjing Medical College). It was renamed as “the First School of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University” in 1994, upgrading Nanjing Medical College to Nanjing Medical University. It is the largest and oldest medical school with the most comprehensive strength of Nanjing Medical University.

    The First School is located in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (Jiangsu Province Hospital), and performs an integrated management with the hospital, Itis the largest medical education, medical treatment and scientific research centre in Jiangsu province, including 6 departments, 43 teaching, and research sections, 2 authorized doctoral degree subjects of first-class discipline and 2 postdoctoral research stations, which belongs to the first group entitled to authorize clinical doctoral degree in our country. This school has 1national key discipline (cardiology), 1 preponderant discipline among the high education institutions in Jiangsu province (Clinical Medicine), 18 key national clinical disciplines,1 National key laboratory (Reproductive Medicine), 1 key laboratory of Ministry of Health (Living donor liver transplantation), 5 Clinical Medical centers in Jiangsu Province, 2 clinical medical centres of Jiangsu “KeJiaoQiangWei” program, 2 clinical medical centre construction units and 12 key medical disciplines.

    At present, the school has 1753 clinical teachers, including 130 professors, 271 associate professors, 128 doctoral supervisors, 332 master supervisors. There is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one holder of the national funds for outstanding youth, one holder of the national funds for excellent youth, one for thousand youth talents plan awarded by CPC’s Organization Department, one for new-century talent awarded by China’s Ministry of Education, and seven awards for high-level innovative entrepreneurial talents awarded by Jiangsu province.

    The school possesses 2 majors, including Clinical Medicine and Medical Laboratory Technology. Clinical Medicine was awarded as the state level featured major, key clinical major in Jiangsu higher education and construction program, while Medical Laboratory Technology is a featured major in Jiangsu Province. The school owns 1 state-level off campus base, 4 educational demonstration centers in Jiangsu Province, 2 excellent provincial level curricula, 2 excellent province-level textbooks, 2 “Ten-Three-Five” key textbooks in Jiangsu Province.

    In the past three years, the school has undertaken 7 teaching research topics at or above the provincial level, and has obtained two teaching awards from the province and ministry, and also obtained one award for the excellent provincial doctoral dissertation, and three awards for the excellent master dissertation. At the National Clinical Skills Competition organized by the Ministry of Education for undergraduates, our students achieved championship in 2010, second place in 2011, and first prize in 2012.

  

    At present, the school has 979 undergraduates, 802 seven-year course students, 1117 master degree candidates and 178 doctoral candidates (including 4 international students ), and 370 on-the-job postgraduate students .
