On April 21st, 2018, the First National Competition of Comprehensive Public Health Skills for College Students was successfully held in Nanjing Medical University. This competition was organized by Public Health and Preventive Medicine Professional Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. It was hosted by Nanjing Medical University and Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention and sponsored by China National Biotechnology Co., Ltd. The theme of this competition was “focus on theory and practice, prevention and clinical integration”. 124 undergraduate students majoring in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from 31 universities of China took part in the competition. More than 500 teachers from 70 universities and professionals from 10 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention watched the competition.
The chief referee of the competition was Professor Li Liming of Peking University, who is also the director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Professional Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. Professor Chi Baorong from Jilin University, deputy director of the Medical Education Clinical Teaching Research Center of the Ministry of Education, was the general counsel. Besides, the referees were Professor Wang Xinru from Nanjing Medical University, Professor Ye Dongqing from Anhui Medical University, Professor Wu Fan from Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Professor Wang Hua from Jiangsu Provincial Health Planning Commission, Professor Zhou Minghao from Jiangsu Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Professor Hu Yonghua from Peking University, and Pu Yuepu from Southeast University.
Leaders and guests from the Ministry of Education, the National Health Committee, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, the National Medical Examination Center, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, and China Biotechnology Co., Ltd. attended the opening ceremony with Wang Changqing, Party committee secretary of Nanjing Medical University, as the host. Shen Hongbing, president of Nanjing Medical University, gave a welcome speech to the teachers and students of the participating universities as the representative of the organizing committee and expressed thanks to experts and referees. He said that, aiming at “novelty, orderliness, enthusiasm, and perfection”, the university will try to build a different competition with a higher level. It will promote learning, education, construction through the competition, making contribution to the development of public health and the facilitation of Healthy China strategy. Gao Bin, deputy director of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education, Liu Jianjun, deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Chang Jile, the ombudsman of the National Board of Disease Control and Prevention, and Ge Daokai, director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, delivered warm speeches. Hu Jianli from the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Zhao Jingwei, a representative of Peking University, took oath on behalf of referees and contestants. The chief referee, Professor Li Liming, read out the rules and regulations” of the competition and announced the official start of the first National Competition of Comprehensive Public Health Skills for College Students.
The competition included the preliminary and final rounds. In the preliminary competition in the morning, a “site-based assessment” approach was adopted with the main focus put on students’ mastery of basic public health skills; 11 teams entered the finals in the afternoon and had basic theoretical tests and case study assessment on public health. The final results were made up of the scores in both basic theory of public health and the case study assessment.
During the one-day competition, all teams showed good moral manners and demonstrated high competition levels. After fierce competition, there were 1 special prize, 3 first prizes, 6 second prizes, 20 third prizes and 12 individual prizes in total. In addition, the organizing committee of the competition also selected 10 special awards, 20 first prizes, 30 second prizes, 40 third prizes, and 10 “the most popular works among students” prizes among 100 participating entries in the 2018 Undergraduate Health Education Popular Science Competition. The presentation of awards for all the prize-winning units and individuals were conducted on site.
This competition was the first time for our university to undertake a national-level professional medical competition. With the careful preparation and orderly organization of personnel at all levels and all units, the competition achieved a complete success. The competition was broadcasted live and in full for the first time, expanding channels and scope of the information dissemination; the competition topics covered public health emergencies and health problems in daily life, which could encourage students to better promote “Healthy China” and “Healthy Jiangsu” construction and further lead the public to form better health concept.
