The World Day For Animals In Laboratories is observed every year on April 24th. In honor of those laboratory animals that sacrifice for researches on human health and medical education, Nanjing Medical University, along with Jiangsu Provincial Society of Laboratory Animals, held a commemoration ceremony in Jiangning campus.
At noon, an on-site consultation campaign about research on experimental animals, regulations, ethics and welfare was held by Jiangsu Provincial Experimental Animal Base for Medicine and Pharmacy and Jiangsu Provincial Society of Laboratory Animals in Shuren Plaza. By the means of posters, consultations, material distribution and award-winning questions, students learnt about the concepts, standardization and humanism of using laboratory animals in the principles of science. We should respect and treat the animals well with gratitude and awe. All the experiments should be conducted with 3R principles (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) so as to protect the animals’ ethics and welfare.
Over 200 teachers and students participated in the activity, which also attracted media attention, including Jiangsu TV Station, Nanjing TV Station, Lychee News, Xinhua Daily. At present, we have nurtured 70,000 laboratory animals of nearly ten species with an annual usage of roughly 200,000. It offers great support to upgrade medical education and research, thus building a high-level medical university.
