The 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was released on August 15, 2017 by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. It is the fourth time for Nanjing Medical University to enter Top 500 universities. It is listed in the group of 401-500. 45 universities from mainland China break into the ranking, a number slightly higher than that of last year. Only three independent medical universities are included, which are Capital Medical University, Nanjing Medical University and Peking Union Medical College.
Starting from 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world top 500 universities annually based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data, with the current release being its 15th edition. ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and faculty members winning Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance.
