The final competition of SAS Data Mining Champion among national universities, sponsored by HSBC, was held in Beijing from November 19 to 20, 2016. Three NMU teams, composed of nine undergraduate students from the Department of Biostatistics of the School of Public Health, stood out among 700 teams from all over China in the preliminary competition. In the final match, the three teams all entered national top 50, ranking respectively 6, 22 and 46. The results were the best among all medical universities and colleges, making a historical breakthrough. Besides, Nanjing Medical University received an Award for Excellent Organization.
SAS Data Mining Champion among national universities was hosted by SAS Institute Inc., a renowned statistical analysis software company, with participants coming from such majors as finance, management, mathematics and business and economics of comprehensive universities. The subjects of the competition were real projects of HSBC. The review team included statistical analysts, computer programmers and financial experts. During the match, a job fair was held, inviting such financial and pharmaceutics employers as HSBC, Bank of Communications, China Everbright Bank, Pfizer, and Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. Many employers showed their intention to hire NMU students.
Established in 2012, the Department of Biostatistics lays equal stress on theory and practice, statistics and medicine, innovation and application. The undergraduates of the major have accomplished several achievements in many national competitions. The employment situation of the undergraduate students enrolled in 2012 was quite encouraging.
