The School of Rehabilitation Medicine, Nanjing Medical University (NMU) was established in October, 2014, tracing its root to the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of the First School of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University. The school is featured by its significant innovation and youth vitality. The program of Rehabilitation Therapy has been approved to be one of the first groups of admission programs by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. In 2009, the school was selected as the national construction site of special programs.
The school attaches great importance to talent training and continuously encourages teaching reforms and innovations so as to strengthen the construction of teaching conditions and teaching staff. The school now has taken a lead in the nation to perfect training program, teaching syllabus, teaching models, and teaching standard and norms, which has become a benchmark of teaching for rehabilitation therapy. At present, the school has several laboratories together built by the central and local government and 10 teaching laboratories with advanced equipments, which has become a demonstration center of experimental teaching for rehabilitation therapy. Besides, the school also has more than 10 domestically renowned Class A tertiary comprehensive hospitals with advanced teaching conditions, excellent teaching staff and perfect discipline construction, and high-level teaching and practice bases of Class A tertiary rehabilitation hospitals. In particular, as the main discipline of the school, rehabilitation medicine represented bythe Center of Rehabilitation Medicine of the First School of Clinical Medicine of NMU has always kept the first place on the National Best Hospital Ranking in 2012-2014 released by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University. On the other aspect, the school has always been broadening international vision for the education of rehabilitation medicine, and keeps a close link with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) and World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT). In recent years, the school has established extensive cooperation and exchanges with overseas higher education institutions such as Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), UniversityofDayton, CreightonUniversity (whose program of occupational therapy ranks first in the U.S.), University of Sydney, University of Queensland and University of Manchester. Many students from the school have obtained opportunities to study in the United States in exchange programs.
The school boasts national academic leaders and high-level faculty. Prof. Jianan Li, the core leader of teaching group, is a national outstanding teacher, outstanding teacher of Nanjing Medical University, former president of International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) and current chair of ISPRM Council of Past Presidents, member of Chinese Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and member of Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, who enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad. Currently, the school has nearly 50 faculty and staff members, including 8 teachers with doctoral degree, and the proportion of senior title and postgraduate degree outnumbers its counterparts in China with more than half of teachers having overseas study experience. The school academic team has presided over more than 10 programs of the National Natural Science Foundation, published over 30 SCI papers, obtained 5 scientific and technological achievements of provincial and ministerial levels, and collected research funding of various kind more than CNY 10,000,000.
In the past five years, the school has enrolled many outstanding students and 100% of them made NMU their first choice in their college applications. The employment rate of nearly 500 graduates of five batches that the school has nurtured arrives 100%, and 60% of them have been employed by Class A tertiary comprehensive hospitals, Class A tertiary rehabilitation hospitals and higher education institutions of municipal and provincial levels of Jiangsu, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Sichuan, Zhejiang and Fujian.
