Founded in 1953 by Prof. Yan Shoumin, the pioneer of China’s modern pediatric, the NMU School of Pediatrics, is one of the earliest pediatrics disciplines in China. In 1958, 5-year pediatrics program was established. In 1959, the Department of Pediatrics was established. In 1962, it began to enroll the first postgraduate student intopediatric studies. In 1981 and 1986, it was approved as one of the earliest batch of pediatric master degree program and Ph.D degree programs in China. In 1999, the School as approved to establish a postdoctoral mobile station in pediatrics. In 2018, the School of Pediatrics was established. In 2019, NMU pediatricsbecame one of the first batch of first-class undergraduate disciplinary programs in China.

The school integrates the strongest pediatrics clinical education resources represented by the NMU Affiliated Children’s Hospital, NMU First Affiliated Hospital, NMU Second Affiliated Hospital, and NMU Affiliated Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. There are 2,598 faculty and medical staff, including 17 Ph.D. supervisors, 114 master supervisors, 18 full professors, and 38 associate professors. Among the strong faculty of the school, there are expert recipients of the NSFC Distinguished Youth Scholar Fund, National Science and Technologhy Progress Award, Innovation LeadershipTalents of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST),Soong Ching Ling Pediatric Medicine Award, Chinese Physician Award, Jiangsu Specially Appointed Professor, young and middle-aged experts recognized by the China National Health Commission or Jiangsu Province.

Its pediatrics is a key discipline in Jiangsu Province, with a complete range of disciplines at three levels, which have formed multiple key directions such as pediatric nephrology, child health care, neonatal, respiratory, general surgery, cardiothoracic, and pediatric hematological tumors. The school has established 1 national key clinical specialty, 14 provincial key clinical specialties (disciplines), 2 provincial key maternal and child disciplines, 1 Jiangsu Provincial Pediatric Practice Teaching Demonstration Center, and 1 Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Pediatric Major Diseases.

Over the past 60 years, the school has trained more than 2,000 medical talents on pediatric science and made significant contributions to the cause of children’s health. Currently, there are 927  students of pediatric studiesat the school, including 622 undergraduate students and 305 postgraduate students. It has formed a multi-level pediatric talent training system, offering five-year pediatric program , 5+3 integrated clinical medicine (pediatrics) program, master programs, Ph.D programs, post-doctorate, and other pediatric disciplinary programs at all levels. With the student-centered approach, the school focuses on cultivating students' practical ability, critical thinking, and innovative abilities using PBL, TBL, CBL, formative evaluation, OSCE, and other teaching and evaluation methods. The pediatrics graduates are well-received in the job market, with an average employment rate of 98.01%.
