The Fourth School of Clinical Medicine

The Fourth School of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University (NMU) was established in 2007. In March 2018, NMUfounded the School of Pediatrics. The pediatrics major of the school as well as the Affiliated Children’s Hospital and the Institute for Pediatric Research were consolidated into the School of Pediatrics. Currently, it consists of “7 hospitals and 3 departments”, including the Affiliated Brain Hospital, Affiliated Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Affiliated Eye Hospital, Affiliated Friendship Plastic Surgery Hospital, Affiliated BenQ Medical Center, Affiliated Tumor Hospital, Affiliated Geriatric Hospital, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Optometry, and Department of Radiology. The school has 5 national clinical key specialties (including psychiatry, oncology, thoracic surgery, ophthalmology, and cardiothoracic surgery), 18 provincial-level key clinical specialties, and 5 national-level standardized training bases for resident physicians (including collaborative hospitals). The Affiliated Brain Hospital ranks 6thin the national specialty for psychiatry, and the Affiliated Tumor Hospital ranks 9thin the national specialty for oncology. Four disciplines (Psychiatry and Mental Hygiene, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, Optometry) are university-level key disciplines (preferred disciplines).During the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period, the scientific research level of the school has witnessed great and continuous improvement. In total, the school undertook 221 projects granted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China; published 1,366 SCI papers; achieved 109 high-quality scientific research results at the province level or above. In 2021 alone, our schoolwas granted 34 projects by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

The schoolnow has 37 teaching and research sections, a total of 454 clinical teachers with teaching titles, including 40 full professors and 80 associate professors. The faculty team of the school undertake nearly 4,500 hours of teaching tasks every year, including the disciplinary courses such as ophthalmology, psychiatry, neurology, medical psychology, obstetrics and gynecology. Among them, obstetrics and gynecology, optometry, and surgery (plastic surgery) are recognized as university-level excellent online courses.

Among the undergraduate training programs of the school, there are 5-year program in psychiatry, five-year program in radiology, five-year program in ophthalmology, and four-year program in optometry, all of which enrolls about 120 students every year.Postgraduate training programs include applied psychology, neurology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, and other clinical medical disciplines, all of which enrolls about 150 students every year. The school was approved as a Level 1 academic degree (psychology) in 2011; it was approved as the first-level academic degree program (medical technology) in 2019. Optometry and psychiatry have been approved as nationalfirst-class undergraduate major construction programs.There are 1,092 students in our school, including 612 postgraduates and 480 undergraduates. The schooloffers scholarships such as Enhua Psychiatry, Xiaoyuan Psychiatry, Menicon Optometry, and Mingde Optometry.Since its establishment in 2007, the school had over 2,200 graduates conferred with degrees, accounting for 99.8% of all graduates, and the employment rate in the past three years is 100%.

The schoolhighly values the exchanges and cooperation with well-known universities and research institutes from home and abroad. It has cooperated with Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine, Allele Biotech (Southern California, USA), University of Texas, St. Louis University in the United States, Umea University (UMU) Department of Nursing in Sweden, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Wenzhou Medical University, Tianjin Medical University, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, and other institutions in academic exchange activities.
