The First School of Clinical Medicine

The First School of Clinical Medicine originated from the Medical Department of the Provincial Medical school of Jiangsu (predecessor of Nanjing Medical University), which was founded in 1934. It was later renamed the Department of Medical Care. In 1994, it was formally established and named based on the basis of the Department of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University (NMU).

Sheltered in its carrier, the NMU 1st Affiliated Hospital (Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital), the school has its management integrated into that of the hospital. It has 8 departments and 51 teaching and research sections; 2 Level 1 discipline Ph.D degree conferring programs, namely the clinical medicine and medical technology. Among them, clinical medicine covers 29 Level 2 and Level 3 clinical disciplines, with a post-doctoral research station on clinical medicine. It has 1 national key discipline (cardiovascular disease), 1 advantageous discipline of Jiangsu universities (clinical medicine); 18 national key clinical specialties; 1 state key laboratory (key laboratory of reproductive medicine (clinical center), 1 key laboratory of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (key laboratory of living donor liver transplantation), 5 Jiangsu provincial clinical medicine research centers, 2 clinical medical centers under the “Strengthening Health Project Via Science and Education Initiative”, 2 clinical medical center construction units, and 12 key medical disciplines in Jiangsu Province. The clinical medicine of the school ranks top 1‰ according to ESI.

Currently, the school has 1,847 clinical teachers. Among them, there are 1,243 full-time teachers, including 154 full professors, 316 associate professors, 141 Ph.D. supervisors, and 328 master supervisors. There are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), 1 international member of the American Academy of Medical Sciences, and 13 experts of various national key talent projects; one of the first batch of “National College Huang Danian Model Faculty Team” by China Ministry of Education, 4 provincial “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” teams, 12 provincial innovation teams of the “Strengthening Health Project Via Science and Education Initiative”, and 218 person/times provincial-level recognized talents; 15 people concurrently served as the standing committee members of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA) and higher level organizations, 74 chairmen and vice-chairmen of the specialized branches of Jiangsu Medical Association (JSMA); 1 member of the Executive Committee of the International Society of Surgery (ISS), and 1 vice chairman of International Hearing Society (IHS).

Currently, there are 2,846 undergraduate students (including 59 seven-year postgraduates); 1,318 full-time postgraduate students (including 51 international students), 315 full-time Ph.D students (including 15 international students), and 449 on-the-job physicians pursuing doctoral degrees. The school opens courses of two specialties: clinical medicine and medical laboratory technology. Clinical medicine has been selected as China national-level featured specialty development program, key major of clinical medicine in Jiangsu higher institutions, and a branded major development project of Jiangsu higher institutions. In 2019, it was approved as a special development program of China national first-class undergraduate major in colleges and universities. Medical laboratory is a featured discipline in Jiangsu Province. In 2020, it was approved as a national first-class undergraduate major.

The school and the hospital is China’s national-level extra-curriculum practice and education bases for college students. There are 1 national clinical teaching and training demonstration center, 4 Jiangsu experiment teaching demonstration centers, 5 provincial high quality courses (textbooks), and 6 provincial and ministerial key (planning) textbooks published during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period. Students of the school have yielded excellent results in national-level clinical skills competitions for college students for many times. The employment rate of graduates is above 96%, and the one-time pass rate of practicing physician examination is among the highest in China.
