The School of Foreign Languages, Nanjing Medical University (NMU) can date back to the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Section established in 1934 upon the founding of Nanjing Medical University. In 2000, the university established the Foreign Language Department; in 2003, it started a four-year undergraduate English major program and started student enrollment; in 2006, it founded the School of Foreign Languages, NMU; in 2007, it graduated the first batch of undergraduate students of English major (stream of medical English) in Jiangsu province.

The school now has 60 faculty members, 17 of whom hold senior technical rankings. The school is structured with the Department of English, General English Dept. 1, General English Dept. 2, Graduate Student Foreign Language Department, Medical English Department, Language and Culture Institute, National Medical English Proficiency Test (METS) Teaching and Research Center, English Teaching Experiment Center, as well as College Student Foreign Language Skills Training Base, Foreign Language Training Center, and English Newspaper (NMU NEWS) Editorial Department. It offers more than 20 courses such as English as a major, medical English, general English, Japanese and French, and undertakes nearly 30,000 teaching hours of various teaching tasks of NMU every year.

Adhering to the motto of “Diligent Studying, Truth Seeking”, the school focuses on the general goal of “fostering virtue and cultivating talents” and insists on the operation philosophy of “strengthening the core of humanistic education, consolidating the foundation of language capability, and securing the great integration of medical practice and education”. The quality of education, teaching and personnel training has been welcomed with high appraisals. The one-time pass rate of the College English Test Band 4 (CET4) remains above 97%; the one-time pass rates of the Test for English Majors Band 4 and Band 8 (TEM-4 and TEM-8) reaches 97.7% and 82%, dwarfing the national average by 46 percentage point and 41 percentage point respectively; the graduate student enrollment rate exceeds 30%; the employment rate has been staying at 100% for years.

The teaching team of the school has won the First Prize of the National Finals of the First National College Foreign Language Course Ideological and Political Teaching Competition-English Major Stream, the First Prize of the National Finals of the FLTRP Cup “Star of Teaching” Competition, and the First Prize of the FLTRP Cup “ the National College Foreign Language Teaching Mini-course Competition-Jiangsu”, along with other excellent winning record; the school also instructed student delegations to participate and win many national, provincial, and ministerial entrepreneurship and innovation competitions, including the First Prize of the Jiangsu Province Finals of the “21st Century Coca-Cola Cup” National English Speech Contest, the  Second Prize of the First Jiangsu Province Graduate English Translation Contest-Interpretation and Translation, the First Prize of the First “Foreign Education Club Cup” Jiangsu Provincial College Student Intercultural Communicative Competence Competition, the First Prize of the Undergraduate English Contest-English Major, the First Prize of the English Debate Open Competition of the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), the First Prize of the “FLTRP Cup” National English Reading Competition-Jiangsu Section, the Second Prize of the Second “iTrans Cup” National Medical Translation Competition, etc.

The school is the director unit of the undergraduate school sub-group of the National Medical English Test Expert Group under the Ministry of Education Examination Center. It’s also the standing director unit of the National Medical Foreign Languages Group of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA), the “13th Five-Year Plan” key discipline and first-class major of NMU, and the provincial characteristic specialty construction unit. The school also undertakes the METS research project of the Talent Service Center of the National Health Commission. It has established a collaborative relationship with the Jiangsu Provincial and Nanjing Municipal Health Commission to provide foreign language services to major hospitals in various cities in Jiangsu Province and make due contribution to the cause of Healthy Jiangsu and Healthy China.
