Pubdate:2016-05-23

From April 23rd to 24th, 2016, the 3rd Joint Nanjing Medical University---Western University Medical Education Symposium was successfully held in Nanjing Medical University. A delegation of 5 members from Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry of Western University, led by the Dean, Dr. Michael J. Strong, attended the symposium. University leadership, directors of each department, representatives from affiliated hospitals, schools and Chinese & international students altogether more than 300 people took part in the symposium. The opening ceremony was hosted by Vice President Wang Lin.

Themed as “Medical Education and GP Training”, the symposium began with the Opening speeches by President Shen Hongbing and Dr. Michael J. Strong and they both wished the event a great success and mutual parties could strengthen the cooperation and exchange by this opportunity. Chancellor Chen Qi, Vice President Lu Xiang and Provost Gao Xingya from NMU and Drs. Michael J. Strong, Gary Tithecott and Bertha Garcia from Schulich School delivered the keynote speeches respectively. It was the first time that simultaneous interpretation was provided in the symposium, which enables the audience to understand the whole process without any difficulty.

On April 24th, Drs. Bertha Garcia, Gary Tithecott and Scott McKay conducted workshops on (clinical) teaching for NMU faculty members and doctors from affiliated hospitals, and more than 100 people attended the workshops. They exchanged ideas with Canadian experts on medical teaching issues and held further discussions.

During the symposium, NMU and WU also held talks on the next term symposium, joint student training program, faculty visiting and so on and reached an agreement on some points. The two parties both agreed to make “Simulation in Medical Education” the topic of the 4th joint symposium to be held in WU and signed an agreement on “3+2” joint training program on basic medicine. Meanwhile, the delegation paid visits to School of Public Health, Experimental Animal Center, and the Affiliated Shaw Hospital during their stay in Nanjing. The success of the 3rd symposium marks a firm step that NMU has taken on the road of exchange & cooperation with international universities.

The Western University (WU) is a public research university in Canada and the success rate of applying for physician practice of Schulich graduates ranks 1st in Canada. Since Schulich School and NMU established a friendly relationship in 2012, we have held joint symposia on a regular basis, further discussing on medical education, talent training, scientific research & innovation, social services and so on. The symposium has become a platform for both parties to conduct exchange and cooperation and promote as well as facilitate the further development between NMU and WU.
