Pubdate:2016-03-30

On the afternoon of March 20, Fan Daiming, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and NMU guest professor, was invited to give a lecture in Deshan Forum in Nanjing Medical University. The theme of the lecture was Ushering in a New Era of Medical Development. The lecture was hosted by Shen Hongbing, President of NMU. Over 600 teachers and students attended the lecture.

The lecture was divided into three major parts: the progress and regression of medicine in the past three millennia, the trend of world medicine as well as the trend of medicine in the new China. Academician Fan analyzed the direction of modern medicine. He held the view that medicine is ushering in a brand new era of Holistic Integrated Medicine (HIM). He interpreted the connotation of HIM from the perspectives of whole body, integration and medicine. Scientific integration will contribute to building a new medical system that is more comprehensive and more scientific. Conforming to natural laws, the system will benefit health maintenance and disease diagnosis. In a face-to-face interview, Academician Fan shared his experiences on the road of climbing the mountain of medicine. The students were motivated by his maxim of “To move forward constantly, and to rectify till the end”. Fan encouraged the students to set a goal and then make consistent efforts despite ups and downs, having the courage to refute the past, to refute themselves, and to overcome themselves.

President Shen Hongbing expressed his heartfelt thanks to Academician Fan Daiming. He hoped that the students would take the lecture to the heart, and have a down-to-earth attitude and set up lofty ideals of devoting to the development of medicine.

Professor Fan Daiming is an academician and a vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, an academician of US National Academy of Medicine, a former president of the Fourth Military Medical University. Professor Fan is now the President of Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Cancer Biology, and a chief scientist of National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program). He has a long-standing interest in both clinical and basic research of digestive diseases, and has achieved a grand success especially in the study of gastric cancers. Fan was awarded a first-class Meritorious Service Medal by the Central Military Commission of PRC in 2010.
