Pubdate:2014-11-28

In 2010 a targeted-aid program was set forth between Jiangsu province and Ke zilesukeerkezi, an autonomous prefecture in Xinjiang, as an active response to the call of National Conference of the supporting program for Xinjiang. During the four years up till now, ensuring and improving people’s life there has always been the top priority in the work of Jiangsu group. And therefore, communications and cooperations between the two provinces are enhanced further in fields of economy, technology, culture, education, and medical care. Under the leadership of Jiangsu provincial government, 2nd Affiliated Hospital of NMU sent a medical team to Xinjiang in Feb, 2014 and gave targeted support to the People’s Hospital of Ke autonomous prefectures.

Doctors from 2nd Affiliated Hospital of NMU, after several times of free medical treatment to local people, found that the rate of children with ACHD in Ke autonomous prefectures is higher than in other places in China and most of them come from poor families of ethnic minorities. Owing to the limited medical facilities and lack of money, those children cannot receive treatment effectively in time. However, 90% of children with ACHD can be treated through operations according to the present national medical level. Therefore, the working group of Jiangsu in Ke autonomous prefectures, together with 2nd Affiliated Hospital of NMU and the People’s Hospital of Ke autonomous prefectures launched a Heart Protecting Program, aiming to provide those children from poor family with free medical care. Two children with ACHD have got help from this program and accepted free operation. This program is highly appreciated by all walks of life in Ke autonomous prefectures of Xinjiang, especially when the two children have been cured successfully at last. Local people are all touched by the efforts made by staffs and doctors from Jiangsu. The supporting program not only promotes the social stability of local area but also enhances the understanding and communication between Han and the minorities.

More children with ACHD will be helped by the relief program and have a new lease of life. In the meantime, doctors from cardiovascular surgery department of 2nd Affiliated Hospital of NMU will invite their counterparts from Xinjiang to join the treatment process together to help cultivate the specialties on cardiovascular surgery in Ke autonomous prefectures, promoting the skills of the cardiovascular surgery in the local area via communication and exchanges between doctors from both sides. And the local patients with heart diseases can be treated timely and conveniently.

The second phase of Heart Protecting Program began on Nov 4th, 2014, aiming to help ACHD children of four poor families from Ke autonomous prefectures. The cost is covered mainly by the working group of Jiangsu in Xinjiang and partially by the Children’s Hospital affiliated to Taiwan University.

After talking with the parents, Dr. Tan Xiao, the vice president of People’s Hospital of Ke autonomous prefectures, took the four children and their families to Nanjing on Nov 4th, 2014. Instead of thoracic operation, all children will accept micro–traumatic operation through a small cut at ham root ministry or at chest. The latest technique of surgery ensures minimal wounds and rapid recovery.

The Heart Protecting Program, hosted by the working group of Jiangsu in Xinjiang and the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of NMU, is not only to help those children recover but also to regain happiness and hope for many families. It promotes the understanding and communication between Han and the minorities, contributing greatly to the stability and the development of Xinjiang.
