Han Qide, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited NMU

Pubdate:2014-11-20

On the morning of October 8th, Han Qide, vice president of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and president of Chinese Association of Science and Technology, gave a speech on “Control of Disease Endangering Factors and Screen of Cancer”. More than two thousand people, including university authorities, middle-level cadres, teachers and students, gathered in the stadium of Jiangning Campus of NMU and attended the seminar.

In his report, Mr. Han Qide elaborated his views about factors that develop diseases and the effect of screening diseases. He said that the formation of a specific disease is a pathological process that arises from specific conditions and is caused by multiple pathological factors. Every kind of disease corresponds to its incidence probability. Some factors that lead to the enhancing risks of a certain disease in a group can be regarded as the dangerous factors. In his opinion, very few people would benefit from intervening treatment of these dangerous factors in advance. Some of them even may be confronted with the damaged body for side effects of drugs.

Mr. Han classified cancer into three categories: The first kind of tumors burst out quickly. Once discovered, they are unable to be cured. Therefore, the screen of them can be of no use. The second type that progress slowly can be screened long before early symptoms emerge. A considerable number of tumors belong to the third group of stagnant development, in which some not yet develop thoroughly even when patients die, while others are developing quickly or gradually. Therefore, it depends on their corresponding status to undergo screen or not.

Mr. Han put forward a principle that more rational decisions should be made, for the reason of the low risk incidence, to improve the efficiency of screening and intervening into the dangerous factors. To achieve that, research work firstly should be strengthened to find disease susceptibility biomarkers to help narrow down the range of screen and intervene. Secondly, a comprehensive analysis should be conducted taking multiple dangerous factors into consideration. Intervening measures should be targeted to those who have a higher degree of danger coefficient. At the same time, intervening measures would be safer, more cost-efficient and effective.

Mr. Han implied in his speech that when it comes to minor medical problems, the costs prone to be low and the outcome tend to be good; On the contrary, when it comes to those who are at a late clinical stage, the treatment costs a fortune and the therapeutic effect is unsatisfactory. Therefore, he suggested us to change our attitude toward treatment and make good use of our savings. Meanwhile, a proper view of medical treatment is helpful. The health of a person lies in his or her way of life, living conditions and the fare security. Therefore, it is imperative for us to possess a better and thorough view of a healthy life.
