NMU Held the 2014 International Symposium of Public Health

2014 International Symposium of Public Health took place at Nanjing Medical University on October 11th, which was organized by Nanjing Medical University School of Public Health and co-organized by National Natural Science Foundation of China, Jiangsu Preventive Medicine Association, Jiangsu Society of Nutrition, Jiangsu Society of Toxicology and Nanjing Association of Young Scientists & Technologists. More than three hundred people attended the symposium, including NMU President Hongbing Shen, Vice President Zhufan Zhang, representatives from more than thirty universities and research institutes home and abroad, teachers and students from NMU.The symposium was co-chaired by Director Zhengdong Zhang of NMU Science & Technology Department, Dean Feng Chen of NMU School of Public Health, Associate Dean Zhibin Hu and Yankai Xia of NMU School of Public Health.

At the symposium, Academician Jianguo Xu of National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Prof. Stephen Gange of Johns Hopkins University, Prof. Jody Heymann of University of California, Los Angeles and Prof. Paul K Halverson of Indiana University gave interesting speeches titled by “Behavioral and Ecological Infectious Diseases”, “Public Health Education in the 21st Century”, “Data Driven Approaches to Examining How Social Policy Affects Health Outcomes Around the World” and “Advancing the Capacity of Governmental Public Health Agencies through National Accreditation”. Prof. Jinling Tang of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Qingyue Meng of Peking University, Prof. Tangchun Wu of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Xiaosong Li of Sichuan University, Prof. Yuantao Hao of Sun Yan-sen University and Prof. Feng Chen of Nanjing Medical University delivered lectures on public health research and education, such as “Standing at the Historical Turning Point of Public Health”, “Reform and Innovation of Public Health Education”, “Preliminary Investigation of Systematic Epidemiology on Environmental Health Impairment”, “Catastrophe and Public Health Response”, “MOOC Construction of Medical Statistics” and “Preliminary Trial on ‘Three in One ’Personnel Training Mode of Public Health”.

This event was definitely a landmark activity of both NMU’s 80th Anniversary and the 80th Anniversary of School of Public Health. It brought together international experts in public health research and education both in China and abroad to discuss and share the latest research and education and development trend in the field of public health and preventive medicine. It promoted idea exchanges and inspired innovation. At the same time, it built up a valuable platform for international communication, laying a foundation for pushing multilateral, deep and extensive cooperation among universities and research institutes. Overall, the symposium was a flagship event that featured the latest international scientific research and education in public health and advanced public health development in China.
