Eightieth Anniversary of our NMU successfully celebrated in October 10th.

Over the eighty years of working and striving, Nanjing Medical University have successfully nurtured large number of medical professional students and made tremendous achievements in both education and research. The moment came in the morning of October 10th when our Jiangningcampus was submerged by an atmosphere of celebrating festival. More than three thousand students,teachers, guests and domestic and oversea alumni gathered in the stadium to celebrate the 80th birthday of our university. More than ten thousand students and teachers watched the live broadcast of such a memorial event of our universityin the stadium and library or LianYungang campus.

Guestsof alumni association from overseas, from domestic chapters including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhejiang and Jiangsu, staff of affiliated hospitals and studentson campusexpressed their best regards toward NJMU through video show. School functionariesannounced and displayed the congratulated letters from sister universities such as Georgia Regents University of United States, National Yang-Ming University of Taiwan and Capital Medical University as well ascongratulations,gifts, handwritings letters from universities and colleges, institutions, board members, affiliated hospitals, teaching hospitals, and local chapters of alumni associations. A film show had detailed description onthe journey that NMU had been taken over the eighty years of our universityto reach high achievements in both education and research activitieswithsome of the glory moments displayed.

The opening ceremony started with the playing of powerful and magnificent Chinese national anthemfollowed by central theme of the celebration event: reform and development of NMU.

Cao Weixing, vice-governor of Jiangsu Province, and Ren Yanshen, former vice secretary of Jiangsu Province, the vice president of People’s Political Consultative Conference and the chairman of the board of NJMU, and Wang Xialin, a member of standing committee of provincial party committee and vice chairman of the people’s congress of Jiangsu province and honorary chairman of the board of NJMU attended the opening ceremony. In addition, Zhou Min, Li Yining, Shen Jian, Hu Jinbo, Wang Yonghong, Tao Jing from People’s Political Consultative Conference, government of Jiangsu,Health and Family planning Commission and Department of science and technology were also present at the ceremony.

Additionally, present at the opening ceremony were more than 500 VIP guests, including officials from Provincial Party committee and provincial government, Provincial Organization Department, Provincial Education Department,Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission, Provincial Financial Department, Municipal Government of Nanjing and Lianyungang, and municipal districts of Nanjing. School leadership of more than ninety fellow universities,guests and heads of nine universities and institutions from abroad, seventy board members of NMU,representatives of alumni association at home and abroad,twenty-eight affiliated hospitals, twenty-nine hospitals that shoulder the responsibilities of teaching,and retired officials and teaching staff. As much as 2800 teachers and students gathered in the stadium and enjoyed the ceremony hosted by Dr. Chenqi, Secretary of Party Committee of NMU.

Li Lanqing, the former vice prime minister of State Council and a member of standing committee of the Political Bureau of CPC as well as an outstanding alumnus, has rendered his best regards by presenting his handwriting and part of his own collection of books. Luo Zhijun, the current governor of Jiangsu Province has his letter of congratulation sent to express his sincere blessings toward 80th birthday of NMU.

Dr. Shen Hongbing, the president of NMU, stated in the opening address that we are supposed to follow the requirements of CPC Secretary General Xi Jinping and applied the school motto to the process of cultivating morality and training students. Our top priority is to construct a high-tier teaching staff structure, foster medical talents with high quality and make cutting-edged scientific achievements. We should open our minds, update our concepts and ideas, as well as keep up with frontier of international education and scientific advances. We should actively integrate our work into the process of national and social development and strive for people’s wellbeing.We should actively promote the process of internalization and make breakthroughs in the exchange and integration of world science and culture. We should be aware of the rules and disciplines and be practical and realistic .The educational and scientific research should be able to survive regardless of time, tests and queries.The educational reformneed to be deepened in teaching, personnel management and distribution system, research assessing system, teaching and scientific research security system and pioneering work ought to be carried out to improve the management and teaching efficiency. Teachers should nurture students with their noble spirit and charm of personality while the students should be down-to the-earth and studying extensively and being clear about their goals to better serve people and make contributions to our country.

Professor Michael Strong, Dean of Medical and Dental department of University of Western Ontario, delivered a speech on behalf of all the International sister universities to congratulate our universityfor being rankedin Top 1% of global scientific and technological institutions and Top 500 of global institutional universities. He reviewed years of cooperation with our university and expressed his wishfor the continued collaboration to pursue higher goals.
Professor Li Liming from the Chinese Academy of Medical Science gave speech on behalf of our fellow universities. He stated that universities should be oriented by national science and should attach importance to practical teaching and personnel cultivation. He also expressed his congratulations on the achievements of our university and willingness to strengthen cooperation with NMU.

Dr. Tang Jian from first school of clinical medicine expressed his gratitude toward our university for teaching him to be perseverant, confidentand kind physician. He reminded the audience the school motto“Pursue excellence with erudition and reach perfection with morality” and promised on keeping it in the course of his professional practice: savepeople’s lives.
As a representative of teachers, Professor Miaoyi from the Department of surgery, First Affiliated Hospital of NMU expressed wishesthat it would be their great honor to witness that every student of our university would surpass their teachers in the immediate future and save lives and relieve their pains by their fine professionalspirit, extensive knowledge and exquisite skills.

Alumni and Professor He Zhigang from Harvard Medical College spoke on behalf of alumni. He expressed his love,gratitude and blessing for alma mater by reciting Song of a Wanderer and encouraged students to work diligently for a fruitfulcareerand become the proud of their teachers and their alma mater.

Mr.Ren Yanshen, president of board of NMU and former vice secretary of CPC committee of Jiangsu Province as well as vice president of People’s Political Consultative Conference, announced the official “Commandment on outstanding alumni of NMU”. President Shen gave prizes to outstanding alumni and Secretary Chen Qi expressed appreciation for their contribution to the construction and development of alma mater.

Cao Weixing, Vice President of Jiangsu Province, expressed congratulations on behalf of Provincial party committee and provincial governmentby greeting toward overseas alumni, teachers and students. In his speech, he praisedthe tremendous achievements of our university in scientific research, discipline building, personnel cultivation, and social servicein the past 80 years. He pointed out the great contribution our university has madeto the development of livelihood project and medical and health cause, which guaranteed improvement of health and harmony of Jiangsu society. He also stated in his speech that the furtherdevelopment and growing needs of people in Jiangsu province presented a higher demand for the future development of NMU and he believed that students and teachers of our university would accumulate strength, make progress regardless of difficultiesand progress sooner, better and farther along the road to build a world well-knownmedical university with distinctive characters. He promised that the provincial government will fully support NMU in such course.

The opening ceremony of seminar on the reform and development of NJMU was concluded accompanied by themusicof the school song.
