On August 14th, the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University published its 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities, listing the new top 500 research universities of the world. There are 32 universities from the mainland of China entering the new list, an increase by 4 compared to that last year. For the first time, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tsinghua University are ranked among the top 150 universities. Among 4 new comers in the list, Nanjing Medical University, along with East China University of Science and Technology, Soochow University, and Capital University of Medical Sciences, enters into the top 500 universities of the world for the first time.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June, 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU), a subsidiary of the Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It has been updated annually since. ARWU is based on objective and verifiable data from third-party sources, particularly on internationally comparable research achievements and academic performance. The evaluation criteria include the number of alumni and faculty members receiving the Nobel Prizes or the Fields Medals, the number of highly cited scientists, the number of research articles published in prestigious journals such as Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of the faculty of a university. Each year, out of over 1200 universities evaluated by CWCU, only the top 500 are ranked for ARWU which is now leading a trend in global university ranking endeavor by objectivity and transparency in its evaluation criteria, and has established a Chinese institute based university ranking system. ARWU has been widely reported and cited in the world. Many governments and universities use ARWU as a resource to analyze and compare their national and school-wide situation, and make a variety of effort accordingly to improve the competitiveness of their universities.
