NMU Co-sponsored the Joint Satellite Event of UN and 2014 YOG

On the afternoon of Aug. 17th, the UNAIDS-UNOSSC Joint Side Event-2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which was themed by “Inclusive Partnerships for Health, Sports and Development-Through South-South and Triangular Cooperation”, was held in Nanjing. Along with UNAIDS and UNOSSC, NMU organized this conference as a co-sponsor.
This conference is the only satellite event hosted by the United Nations (UN) during the Nanjing 2014 YOG. And through the multi-cooperation from the local authority, the civil non-profitable organization and the private sector, the conference intends to facilitate health, sports and development among young people. This satellite event was presided by Dr. Djibril Diallo, the Representative of Executive Director of UNAIDS. Mr. Chen Shaojun, Vice Secretary-General of Jiangsu Provincial Government, Mr. Hu Wanjin, Deputy Mayor of Nanjing, Ms. Lindsay Glassco, Director of International Cooperation and Development of IOC, Mr. Wilfried Lemke, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Sports for Development and Peace, Dr. Teresa Liu. Representative of UN Secretary General’s Envoy on South-South Cooperation and Mr. Hamza Chraibi, Moroccan Young Ambassador of Nanjing YOG addressed their speeches individually on this event. All of them emphasized the significance that sports laid on health and life, and introduced what they have done in the following areas such as strengthening health education towards teenagers, promoting sports activities and protecting women and children’s health, respectively. After the speeches, the guests signed on a football solemnly whose round appearance symbolized UNAIDS’ good wishes “Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS-Related Deaths” for the global widespread disease.
As the sole co-sponsor of this side event, NMU mainly took part in the idea-exchanging section “Substantive Health Topics” which was chaired by the university President Shen Hongbing. Four specialists delivered their reports in this part. Dr. Li Jianan, President of International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Management and the Director of Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of the First Affiliated Hospital introduced the general development of rehabilitation therapy system in China. Dr. Wang Jianming, Chairman of the Department of Social Medicine and Health Education of the School of Public Health, discussed HIV/AIDS epidemic situation in our country and talked about its measures on prevention and control. Dr. Xu Fei, Vice-Director of Nanjing Center for Disease Control & Prevention, shared with audience his research results that could effectively reduce the possibility of getting non-communicable diseases by physical exercises and improving the living environment. Finally, Dr. Chen Yan, Vice-Director of Emergency Department of the First Affiliated Hospital, vividly demonstrated the “Platinum 10 Minutes” in Emergency Care Programme. The simple but profound reports and the brilliant speeches by these speakers won very enthusiastic response from the audience. Dr. Diallo specifically extended his acknowledgement and appreciation for NMU’s outstanding performance in this joint satellite event.
Other participants including representatives from National Health and Family Planning Commission of PRC, China Foundation, China-Africa Business Council and athletes of YOG also gave their speeches in this conference.
