NJMU Delegation Visited Overseas Alumni in USA

To further strengthen the communication between NJMU and overseas alumni as well as reinforce the friendship among overseas alumni, from July 19th to 22nd, a NJMU Delegation of 5 led by Leng Mingxiang, NJMU Deputy Party Secretary and Discipline Inspection Commission Secretary, visited overseas alumni in USA. Over 80 alumni in Greater Washington Region and California Region attended the gathering.
The Welcoming Party was presided over by Prof. Tao Yuanxiang, the Vice Chairman of NJMU Overseas Alumni Association and Dean of University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. Mr. Gao Li, NJMU Overseas Alumni Association Chairman and Professor of the Medical School of The Johns Hopkins University, gave a welcoming speech on behalf of overseas alumni. Consul Zheng Baoguo welcomed NJMU Delegation’s visit to USA, and congratulated NJMU on the 80th anniversary of the founding of the university on behalf of the Education Department of Chinese Embassy in Washington. Leng Mingxiang, NJMU Deputy Party Secretary and Discipline Inspection Commission Secretary, introduced the history and development of NJMU, its achievements in teaching, scientific research, medical treatment and other fields in recent years, and its status among all the universities, especially medical schools, in the whole country and the whole province. Fa Xiaoyan, Development Office Director, introduced the preparations for celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of NJMU. Han Xiao, Dean of the School of Basic Medicine, introduced the school’s achievements in scientific research and teaching in recent years. Tao Liangfeng, Lu Li and Liu Huaitian, former chairmen of NJMU Overseas Alumni Association, introduced and reviewed the preparation and establishment of NJMU Overseas Alumni Association in USA 18 years ago, its growth and development in recent years, as well as the contributions made by the Association to connecting NJMU and overseas alumni, supporting the development of NJMU, and their efforts to take part in the public benefit activities and social services of the Chinese American groups in Greater Washington Region. Shan Taiqi, an alumnus of Class 1963, introduced the studies of Gao Jingtai, one of the first graduates of NJMU (former Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Medical Administration), his experience in practicing medicine in USA and contributions to the development of Sino-US relations. Shan Taiqi and his wife Gao Jiansong also gave some precious historical picture materials kept by Gao Jingtai (group photo of graduates of Class 1934, etc.) to NJMU as gifts. Mao Li, former Chairman of NJMU Overseas Alumni Association and Dean of the School of Dentistry of University of Maryland, introduced the achievements of overseas alumni who work in the frontier domains of world medical research, and their experience in cooperating with the alma mater . In Greater Washington Region, Education Department Officer of Chinese Embassy in Washington, Chairman of Chinese Alumni Association of Greater Washington, Chairman of Chinese Association for Science and Technology-USA and Washington Branch, Chairman of Jiangsu and Nanjing Natives Association of Greater Washington, Chairman of USWCCC (former JSICC) and others attended the gathering on invitation.
In San Francisco, along with the NJMU Delegation’s visit, the California chapter of NJMU Overseas Alumni Association was officially established. Dr. Hang Bo, chief scientist of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Life Sciences Department, serves as the Chairman. Shen Benquan (San Francisco), Zhao Xiaohui (LA), Fan Xuemu (LA) serves as Vice Chairmen of the local chapter. Accompanied by alumni Hang Bo and Xia Dongxiang, the delegation visited the Life Sciences Department of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the ALS Circular Accelerator Center, Li Ka-shing Biomedical Center, and the laboratory of Dr. Randy Schekman who is the Nobel laureate of 2013 in Physiology or Medicine, all at the University of California Berkeley.
At the welcoming party, NJMU Delegation and alumni had warm exchanges and interaction. They shared the stories regarding the development and achievements of NJMU, and the joy of the 80th anniversary of the founding of NJMU, and reviewed and renewed their student-teacher connection and friendship between classmates.
Vice Chairman Zhao Xiaohui organized the alumni gathering in L.A. Mr. Sun Weidong of Chinese Consulate General in LA attended the gathering, welcomed the visit of NJMU Delegation, and congratulated them on the 80th anniversary of the founding of NJMU.
The Delegation also met father-son alumni—Mrs. Li Dexing of Class 1946 and his son Li Zhiwei of Class 1977 as Mr. Li Dexing was a former teacher of NJMU. Chinese media in L.A. did special interviews and reports covering this event.
During this visit, the delegation witnessed the outstanding achievements of overseas NJMU alumni, felt the deep affection of overseas alumni for their Alma Mater, and received enthusiastic congratulations from overseas alumni on the 80th anniversary of the founding of NJMU.
