On May 9 and 10, an outstanding alumnus of NMU, academician of the American Institute of Medicine, U.S.A., Dean of the oral biology and medicine department of the University of California, Los Angeles, Prof.Wang Cunyu, paid a visit to his alma mater, Nanjing Medical University. On the morning of May 9 at Room 302, Xianzhi Building, Prof. Wang made an oral presentation entitled "How to publish papers on top journals" Prof. Shen Hongbing, Vice President of NMU, was present at the presentation.
To begin with, Prof. Wang firstly expressed his appreciation to NMU for educating him with solid knowledge foundation, basis of his later academic career in the U.S.A. In addition, Prof.Wang defined scientific research, introduced the focuses of the top magazines and explained how to develop research thinking ability as well as how to guide students conducting experiments.
In the end, on behalf of NMU, Prof. Xu Shan, director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Office, presented a souvenir to Professor Wang Cunyu, with a sincere wish that Prof. Wang could back to NMU and interact with teachers and students more frequently.
During his early years, Prof. Wang studied stomatology at Peking University and Nanjing Medical University. In 1990, he started his career of postdoctoral training in Forsyth Institute, Boston, U.S.A. During that period, his research focused on the oral inflammation and bone resorption. In 1995, supported by the National Institutes of Health, U.S.A., he went to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for further study, and in 1998, he got PhD in biology and genetics.
In 1999, he worked as an associate professor for the Michigan University Dental School, and in 2004, he was awarded the honorary title of Professor Richard H. Gingery. Since 2007, Prof. Wang has been working for the UCLA. Prof. Wang is mainly engaged in the field of human health and disease, including molecular signal and cancer therapy; chronic inflammation and infection of the molecular regulation; and the characteristics of molecular control and craniofacial regeneration of adult stem cells. In fact, his theory of regulating cancer cell death through NF-κB transcription factors is an important milestone, which was ranked by "Science" in 1996 as one of the top ten important discoveries in the life sciences. As a dental researcher, his achievement is unprecedented.
In the past 15 years, lots of his study results have been published in the world's top academic journals, such as Science, Cell, Stem Cell, Cancer Cell, Lancet, Nature Medicine, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Biotechnology, etc. His articles have been cited for over 12,000 times, making him one of the hot scientists in the field of odontology.
Till now, Prof. Wang has obtained many awards, including the Award of International Dental Research for young investigator ( 1999 ) , the Innovation Award for oral therapy of International Dental Research Association / GlaxoSmithKline ( 2006 ) , the William J. Gies biological research Award of the International Dental Research Association / American Dental Research ( 2003 , 2009 ) and the Award of Distinguished Scientist in International Dental Research ( 2009 ). In 2011, he was elected as the National Academy of Medicine, U.S.A., which was one of the highest honorary titles in American medicine and public health area. Besides, he was the first scholar in China being elected to the National Academy of Medicine, U.S.A., in the last century.
