Founded in 1951, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (NMU) (also the Second Red Cross Hospital of Jiangsu Province, Second Clinical Medical School of NMU) has a history of 70 years.
Being a Class III Type A general hospital under the direct administration of the Jiangsu Commission Health, the hospital undertakes the important tasks such as medical care, education, scientific research, and public welfare. The hospital has three branch campuses (namely the Jiangjiayuan Campus, the Sajiawan Campus and the Maigaoqiao Campus), which add up to an total 93 mu in land area, 163,000 m2 in construction area and RMB 947 million in fixed assets (including RMB 600 million valued specialty equipment); the hospital also has 2,500 designated beds, 1,622 actual open beds, 49 open wards, and over 2,900 staff.
The hospital holds a yearly service record of 1.51 million outpatient and emergency visits, 60,000 discharged in-patients and 40,000 operations. There are 37 clinical departments, 14 of which are provincial key clinical specialties; it has 2 key medical disciplines included in the “Strengthening Health Project Through Science and Education” Project of Jiangsu Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, 4 disciplines included in the China Top 100 Disciplines ranked by 2020 Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) released. The hospital is also member unit of China National Health Commission (NHC) General Physician Training Base, a training base for digestive endoscopy diagnosis and treatment, a training base for Level IV gynecological endoscopy diagnosis and treatment, a training base for clinical pharmacists, a standardized training base for residents and a national drug clinical trial institution.
The hospital is joined with a large number of high-caliber talents, 8 expert recipients of government special allowances, 3 provincial level Young and Middle-Aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 1 provincial level Innovative and Entrepreneurial Team, 2 provincial level Innovative and Entrepreneurial Talents, 6 provincial level distinguished professors and medical experts, more than 30 candidates of “333 Project”, 4 medical innovation teams in the “Strengthening Health Project Through Science and Education” Project of the Health and Family Planning Commission of Jiangsu Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, 5 key medical talents, and 19 young medical talents. In the past 3 years, the hospital has been granted a total of 204 scientific research projects, including 81 projects above the province level, 29 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China; the hospital also published 397 SCI-indexed papers; won more than 10 awards including the National Science and Technology Award for Maternal and Child Health, the Jiangsu Science and Technology Award, the New Medical Technology Introduction Award of Jiangsu Commission of Health, and the Jiangsu Medical Science and Technology Award.
Directly affiliated to NMU, the hospital now is joined with 23 professors, 56 associate professors, 29 Ph.D. supervisors, 111 master supervisors, 15 doctoral programs, and 31 master programs. It is also the postdoctoral mobile workstation of NMU. There are 2 university-level key laboratories and 1 clinical skill training center. The hospital has been undertaking theoretical and internship tasks in clinical medicine and other specialties, as well as clinical internship tasks in clinical medicine, nursing, imaging medicine, clinical pharmacy, rehabilitation medicine, and MBBS for international students. There are nearly 400 Ph.D. candidates studying in the hospital; every year, the hospital receives over 600 interns and trainees.
