Nanjing Medical University (NMU) has 23 affiliated hospitals and more than 50 teaching hospitals in such cities as Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Huai’an, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Qingdao. The following five teaching hospitals are designated for international student’s internship:
Jiangsu Province Hospital is also named as the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, the Institute of Clinical Medicine of Jiangsu Province and the Red Cross Hospital of Jiangsu Province. Its predecessor, the affiliated clinic of Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Medical Affairs which was founded in 1936, has more than 70 years of history. Jiangsu Province Hospital, the most comprehensive hospital in Jiangsu Province is a center for medical treatment, teaching, and research covering a land of 199,800 square meters with a building area of 270,000 square meters, its total fixed assets amount to CNY 2 billion. The 3,000-bed hospital currently employs over 4000 staff members. The existing hospital administrative affiliation relationship is under the direct management of the Jiangsu Provincial Health Department and the party affiliation relationship is under the direct administration of the Party Committee of Nanjing Medical University.
The hospital is noted for its comprehensiveness and specialties with 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering—Professor Wang Xuehao, from the Liver Transplantation Center. It has 1 state key discipline in Cardiovascology, 12 national clinic key specialty construction units (including Cardiovascular Medicine, Hematology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Laboratory, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine, Clinical Care disciplines, Occupational Disease, General Surgery, Urology, Respiratory Medicine and Liver Transplantation Laboratory),1 key laboratory (Liver Transplantation, of the Ministry of Health), 4 provincial key disciplines, 2 clinical medical centers listed in the “Scientific Health Projects” of Jiangsu Province, 16 engineering medical key disciplines (laboratory) listed in the “Scientific Health Projects” of Jiangsu Province, 5 provincial medical treatment centers and 23 provincial clinical key specialties. The hospital’s doctor’s program is in the first-level discipline of clinical medicine. It is also the clinical medicine post-doctoral research station, offering doctor’s and master’s degrees in clinical medicine. The First School of Clinical Medicine is located in this hospital with 5 academic departments and 45 teaching and researching departments. More than 200 teachers are devoted to clinical medical treatment and teaching in this institution.
The hospital has taken an active part in international academic exchange and cooperation with its counterparts or laboratories in the US, Japan, Australia and Italy.
This hospital is also named as the Second Clinical Hospital Affiliated with NMU, the Second Red Cross Hospital of Jiangsu Province and Children’s Hospital Affiliated with NMU. It is a teaching hospital of NMU and a National Drug Clinical Trial Institution which includes 12 majors as well as a Ministry of Health training base for Digestive Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment, General Practitioners and grade 4 Laparoscopic Gynecology Diagnosis & Treatment.
The hospital occupies an area of 37,523.8 square meters with a building area of 79,245.6 square meters and 1,130 beds. The hospital serves 110,000 outpatients annually. It currently has 1,981 staff members including 1,729 medical professionals, of whom 305 have senior titles, 543 middle titles, 6 doctoral supervisors, 53 master’s supervisors, 10 professors and 42 associate professors. The associate professors include 8 experts who receive the Special Government Allowance granted by the State Council of China.
After the take-over of Nanjing Third Hospital in March 2007, there were two hospital branches. The departments of Pediatrics, Gynecology, Nephrology, and Ophthalmology were moved to the East branch. The headquarters area was focused on developing the departments of Gastroenterology, General Surgery, General Practice, etc. Since then, a special medical pattern has developed that has resulted in “major clinical specialty, major integration” for the headquarters and “major clinical specialties, minor integration” for the East branch. By the year 2009, it had succeeded in becoming a top comprehensive hospital. There are 37 clinical departments and 15 departments of teaching and research, among which the departments of Internal Gastroenterology, Internal Nephrology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Geriatrics, Neurology, Pediatrics, Endocrinology, General Surgery and Oncology are the key provincial clinical disciplines of Jiangsu Province. In recent years, the main revenue indicators have maintained a more than 20% growth,and the total income has increased from CNY 216 million in 2007 to CNY 819 million in 2012;the revenue has increased from CNY 233 million to CNY 745 million; the number of beds has increased from 500 to 1130; fixed assets have increased from CNY 150 million to CNY 470 million; annual outpatients have increased from 300,000 to 1,100,000. At these fast rates of development, the growth level of each indicator is among the top in the Medical Information Ranking issued by the Department of Jiangsu Health.
The Second School of Clinical Medicine of NMU is situated in the Second Affiliated Hospital with NMU and includes 14 departments of teaching and research that undertake the responsibility of teaching five-year-program, seven-year-program and some international student’s internships as well as cultivating candidates for master’s and doctor’s degrees.
Among the 15 medical laboratories, there are 5 departments that are best assembled with talents and equipment: X-ray, Physical Diagnosis, Radiotherapy, Clinical Laboratory and Pathology. Their assets include equipment such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance; Spiral CT; Linear Accelerator; Epileptic Knife; Laser Lithotripter; DSA, ECT, and PACS Systems; Color Ultrasonography; TCD; Holter; Cardiofax ECG-9130P; Automatic Biochemistry Analyzer; and an Automatic Electrochemical Immune Luminometer. The hospital offers radiotherapy of tumors and Interventional Therapy and Stereotactic Conformal Radiotherapy as well as physical examinations and testing.
Nanjing First Hospital (Nanjing Hospital Affiliated to NMU) is one of the first top comprehensive hospitals established by the Ministry of Health of China. It functions as a training base for PCI endoscopic diagnosis and treatment by the Ministry of Health for general practitioners in Jiangsu Province and for standardization for resident doctors. At the same time, the hospital is also a center for the clinical trial of cardiovascular drugs at a provincial level for the prevention and treatment of diabetes at a municipal level of Nanjing, for trauma rehabilitation for industrial injuries in Nanjing and for clinical nuclear medicine in Nanjing. Nanjing Cardiovascular Hospital, China’s Drug Clinical Study Institution and Nanjing Red Cross Eye Bank are also part of this hospital. In November 2002, the hospital passed the BSI ISO9001 quality management system certification.
The hospital was established in February 1936, with 1,665 beds. In the year 2012, the hospital was diagnosing and treating 1.573 million patients. Among the 2,169 active staff members, 302 are medical professionals with senior titles. The hospital currently occupies an area of 57,900 square meters, with a building area of 118,900 square meters. In this hospital, there are 1 national key medical discipline, 1 national key clinical specialty, 2 provincial key medical disciplines, 3 innovation teams, 3 key disciplines of NMU, 13 key clinical specialties at the provincial level, 1 Disease Treatment Center in Jiangsu Province (coronary disease), 9 key clinical specialties at the municipal level, and 37 programs for candidates of the master’s degree and doctor’s degree. It also runs 1 postdoctoral scientific research station at the state level.
The hospital is excellently equipped with 61 sets of equipment valued at over CNY 1,000,000, including a flat-panel digital cardiac system, a multi-slice CT, a 1.5T and a 3.0 magnetic resonance tomography, an ECT, a digital X-ray image-forming system, a shock wave lithotiptor, color Doppler ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus, a gastrointestinal videoscope and a DCI and ICU system. In 2005, together with 17 second-level hospitals in Nanjing, Subei and Anhui, it established the “Nanjing First Group Hospital.” The hospitals share advanced medical technologies and have built 77 branches in Cardiopathy, Diabetes Mellitus, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Intervention and Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Jiangsu, Anhui, and Hubei Provinces.
Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital is one of the most comprehensive institutions in Jiangsu Province, which incorporates medical treatment, teaching and research. It was founded as a Christian hospital in 1892 by Dr. William Edward Macklin, M.D., a Canadian missionary to China with the assistance of an American Church. Since Macklin was the first president, the hospital was also popularly known as “Ma Lin Hospital,” after the Chinese name of this founder.
This hospital currently has 1,698 beds and 2,900 staff members, including 2,300 medical professionals, 300 chief and deputy physicians, 180 professor and associate professors, 120 doctoral supervisors and master’s supervisors and 38 famous experts who receive special allowance from the State Council. In the year 2011 alone, it treated more than 2,000,000 outpatients and emergency cases.
This hospital is well staffed and excellently equipped. There are 32 clinical departments and 32 medical technical sections, special research sections and laboratories. The Department of General Surgery is a national key discipline; the Departments of Orthopedics, Obstetrics, Digestive, Endocrinology, and Clinical Nursing are national key disciplines; the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Orthopedics is a clinical center at the Jiangsu Province level; and the Departments of Rheumatology and Immunology, Oncology, Endocrinology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cardio-thoracic Surgery and Anesthesiology are key disciplines in the list of “Scientific Health Projects” of Jiangsu Province. This hospital maintains a leading position at home and abroad in the fields of spinal deformity correction, liver transplantation, Allogeneic mesenchymal stem cell transplantation, reproductive medicine, related renal transplantation, digestive system disease, endoscopic diagnosis and interventional technique, three-dimensional conformal and intensity-modulated radiotherapy. The Departments of Osteoarthropathy Treatment, Neurology, Pharmacy, Pathology, Geriatric Medicine and Infectious Diseases are key disciplines at the Nanjing municipal level. In 2006 its postdoctoral station was approved by the State Personnel Ministry and currently it runs 2 doctoral programs in the first-level discipline of clinical medicine, 16 doctoral programs in the second-level disciplines and 25 master programs. With the approval of the state Health Ministry, it became the training center for specialists and clinical pharmacists and cardiovascular interventional diagnosis and treatment technology (arrhythmia intervention). In addition, it is also the first training center for surgeons in Jiangsu Province. The Jiangsu Province medical quality control center for the Departments of Infection, Orthopedics and Obstetrics and Gynecology is located in the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital; and the Departments of Cerebrovascular Diseases and Perinatal Diseases, along with the Digestive Endoscopy Clinic Center of Jiangsu Province have been established in this hospital. The hospital has been recognized by the Ministry of Health of China as a model for carrying out the clinical path and providing high-quality nursing services.

Nanjing Children’s Hospital, also named as the affiliated Nanjing Children’s Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (NMU) and the Red Cross Children’s Hospital of Jiangsu Province is a comprehensive Children’s Hospital that incorporates medical treatment, scientific research, teaching, rehabilitation and health care. The hospital currently has 1,400 beds, treats 1,707,000 children as outpatients and performs surgery on 18,400 children annually. The hospital currently houses 1,729 staff members of whom 181 are senior experts, 6 are doctoral supervisors, 30 are master’s supervisors, 9 are professors, 25 are associate professors, 47 have doctoral degrees and 260 have master’s degrees.
The hospital is noted for its comprehensiveness and specialties including various areas of children’s health. The Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology is a national clinical key discipline, the Department of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery is a key discipline of medicine in the list of “Scientific Health Projects” in Jiangsu Province, the Department of Pediatric Nephrology is listed as an innovative team in the “Scientific Health Projects” of Jiangsu Province, and the Department of Child Health is a key discipline of the Jiangsu Provincial Maternal and Child Health Services.
