Department of Epidemiology

To meet the requirements of development, in 2015, the Department of Epidemiology became independent from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The department started the master’s degree program of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 1990 and PhD program in 2003. These programs are also the key parts of primary discipline doctoral programs and post-doctoral stations of public health and preventive medicine in NMU. In 2006, Epidemiology and Biostatistics was granted as one of the key disciplines of Jiangsu Province for“11th 5-year plan” and became a core component of cancer research center in NMU.

The department has 6 professors, 4 associate professors, 4lectures and 2 technicians. Among these staff members, there are two distinguished professors of Changjiang Scholar Program, two winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, one winner of National Excellent Youth Fund, one winner of the New Century Hundred, Thousand and Ten-Thousand Talent Project at the state level, one winner of Top-talent Project of Central Committee’s Organization Department, one distinguished teacher of Jiangsu province, four winners of “333 high level personnel training project” in Jiangsu Province.

The department offers diverse programs including undergraduate programs and postgraduate programs. The courses include Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology, Evidence-Based Medicine, and Data Management & Analysis, etc. Epidemiology was honored as a national bilingual model course. Both Epidemiology and Biostatistics were honored as excellent courses of Jiangsu Province. Three textbooks, “Epidemiology (the 8th version)”, “Epidemiology (bilingual)”, “Data Management & Analysis”, were listed as the national textbooks. In recent years, the department has presided a series of national and provincial teaching reform projects and received the second-prize of National Teaching Achievement Award and the second-prize of Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province.

After years of development, the department has formed several stable and advantageous research areas, including epidemiology of chronic non-communicable diseases and infectious diseases. The ongoing research grants in the department include National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 program), National Key Basic Research Program of China (973 program), Science Fund for Creative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, key programs of National Nature Science Foundation, and international cooperation projects (NIH, etc.). The research results were published in high-level academic journals such as Nature Genetics, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, with NMU as the corresponding author unit. The department has received twice the first-class Natural Science Prize from the Ministry of Education, the second-class National Natural Science Prize, the second-class Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, and so on.
