Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a major discipline of basic medical college in Nanjing Medical University. Department is responsible for teaching program of Microbiology and Immunology for students at all levels including five-year, seven-year and other programs in Nanjing Medical University. There are Microbiology and Immunology program for master degree and Immunology program for doctor degree.
 
There are five full professors, three associate professors, 11 lecturers. Most of teachers have a doctorate degree and most of professors and associate professors have had study and work experience in North America. Professor Guo-Min Deng is a department director, graduated from Tongji Medical University with Bachelor degree in Medicine in 1988, Peking Union Medical College with Master degree in 1994, from Gothenburg University with Ph.D in Immunology in Sweden in 2001, worked as a research fellow in Laboratory of Immunology, NIAID, National Institutes of Health (NIH), in Maryland, USA during 2002-2006, and worked as a faculty of instructor and assistant professor in Harvard Medical School, Harvard University in Boston, USA during 2006-2012. Professor Deng is a member of international Editorial Board of three journals: Clinical Immunology, Open Journal of Rheumatology and Autoimmune Diseases (OJRA), Journal of Cytology & Histology. Professor Deng accepted a position of director of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and academic leader in Sept. 2012. Professor Deng’s research area is the pathogenesis of rheumatic autoimmune disease and bacterial DNA –induced inflammation. In this research field, Professor Deng has published as first author and corresponding author more than 10 articles in several high quality journals, for example,Nature Medicine (2), Arthritis &Rheumatism (4), the Journal of Immunology (3), and obtained a United States patents and a number of United States Government research funding.
 
Nowadays, Immunology is a fast-growing discipline and is involved in pathogenesis of many diseases. Currently, research field in Department of Microbiology and Immunology is mainly focused on the following areas: (1) immune mechanism of disease, (2) Pathogenesis and therapy of autoimmune disease; (3) Innate immune to infection; (4) Viral Immunology and molecular virus.

Faced with new opportunities of development, our Department staffs are working hard in order to build a world-class research Center for autoimmune disease. Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the future will become a national training base for high quality, creative talent researcher, and will also become an international platform for the exchange of autoimmune diseases.
