NMU Hosts 1st Joint Western University-Nanjing Medical University Research Symposium

On April 7th 2014, the 1st Joint Western University–Nanjing Medical University Research Symposium was held in Nanjing Medical University's Xianzhi Building. Six professors from Western University's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and five scholars from Nanjing Medical University held a panel discussion, with approximately 130 teachers and students from colleges and affiliated hospitals participating. Shen Hongbing, vice president of NMU, extended a warm welcome to the Canadian experts on behalf of the university and expressed his wish that this Canadian-Chinese symposium would meet annually in Nanjing, China, and London, Canada, to further extend research and demonstrate the strength of the WU-NMU cooperation.

The symposium was divided into four parts and hosted by Dr. Li Xinli of the NMU's First Affiliated Hospital, and Dr. Ji Yong, Dr. Xu Yong and Dr. Deng Guomin of NMU's School of Basic Medicine. Representatives from WU attending the symposium were Dr. Michael Strong, dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Dr. John Denstedt, special advisor to the dean, Dr. Douglas Jones, deputy dean, Dr. Michael Rieder, associate dean, Dr. Jane Rylett, chair of Department of Physiology & Pharmacology, and Dr. Feng Qingping, professor in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology.

Taking the podium were Dr. Chen Qi, president of NMU, Dr. Shen Hongbing, vice president of NMU, Dr. Chen Minglong, vice director of the Department of Cardiology at the First Affiliated Hospital, Dr. Chen Yun, vice dean of the School of Pharmacy, and Dr. Lu Ming,aAssistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology,. Scholars from both universities demonstrated their latest research achievements and academic opinions, giving greater insight to the teachers and students attending the symposium and illustrating current research trends in the medical field. 

At the end of the symposium, Dr. Strong expressed thanks to NMU for successfully hosting this first joint symposium the symposium and declared his expectations for mutually beneficial cooperation in the future. 

Western University is a renowned university located in London, Ontario, Canada. With a significant international reputation and influence, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry has cooperated with Nanjing Medical University for two years already. During this present visit, besides attending science and technology forums, Dean Strong's delegation also enjoyed academic exchanges between the universities' presidents, vice presidents, Academic Affair Offices, Departments of Personnel, Departments of Science and Technology, Graduate Schools, Schools of Clinical Medicine, and International Cooperation and Exchange Offices. The discussions centred on the exchange of graduate students, training of general medical practitioners, construction of simulated medical centres and standardised patient training, and exchange and cooperation of teaching staff. The two sides reached a consensus on these five issues and look forward to furthering the practical cooperation of both universities.
