Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital is a Level Three Grade A large scale general hospital that combines medical services, teaching, and research. Formerly it was a Christen hospital founded in 1892 by Dr. William Edward Macklin, M. D., Disciples (Canada) Mission to China, with the assistance of the Church of Christ in US. Dr. Macklin was the first director of the hospital and that was why the hospital was widely known as “Ma Lin Hospital” (Ma Lin is the Chinese pronunciation of Macklin).
The hospital now maintains 1,698 beds and has more than 2,900 employees, including over 300 senior physicians, 180 professors and associate professors, 120 supervisors of MS and doctoral students, and 38 renowned specialists who enjoy the State Council Special Allowance. In 2012 the hospital received 2.15 million outpatient and emergency visits and admitted more than 58,000 inpatients.
The hospital has a complete range of specialties with strong technical capacities. Its surgery department is a key discipline promoted jointly by the state ministries. Its orthopedics, obstetrics, gastroenterology, endocrinology, general surgery, and nursing are state-level key clinical specialties. The departments of hepatobiliary surgery and orthopedics are Jiangsu provincial centers of clinical medicine. Its obstetrics, rheumatology & immunology, oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, metabolism, and anaesthesiology are key medical disciplines of Jiangsu Provincial Project of “Promoting the Health Service through Science and Education”. Some of its medical techniques are at China and international leading levels, such as spinal deformity correction, liver transplantation, mesenchymal stem cell transplantation, reproductive medicine, living donor kidney transplantation, endoscopic diagnosis and interventional techniques for digestive system diseases, and 3D conformal intensity-modulated radiotherapy. Its key clinical specialties of Jiangsu Province are general surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, orthopedics, respiratory medicine, immunology, anaesthesiology, urology, hepatobiliary surgery, gastroenterology, endocrinology, hematology, cardiothoracic surgery, vasculocardiology, oncology, plastic surgery and burns, medical laboratory, neurology, emergency medicine, critical care medicine, neurosurgery, and otolaryngology. Its key medical specialties of Nanjing are vascular surgery, infectious disease, pathology, pharmacy, nephrology, radiology, geratology, nuclear medicine, pain medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine. In 2006, authorized by Ministry of Personnel, the hospital set up its postdoctoral research center. Now the hospital has 2 clinical medicine doctoral programs, 16 doctoral programs in secondary medical disciplines, and 25 MS programs. It is also a training base approved by Ministry of Health for medical specialists, clinical pharmacists, and cardiovascular intervention techniques (cardiac arrhythmias intervention). The hospital is also the site of 5 medical service quality control centers of Jiangsu (respectively for infection management, orthopedics, obstetrics & gynecology, urology, and gastroenterology) and 8 provincial level diagnosis and treatment center for specific diseases (cerebrovascular, perinatologic, osteoarticular, aortic, metabolic, rheumatologic and immunologic diseases and digestive endoscopy). The hospital is a key liaison organization of Ministry of Health in the program of promoting model clinical pathways and high quality nursing service.
