Nanjing Children’s Hospital is a Level Three Grade A children’s hospital that combines medical service, research, education, rehabilitation, and health protection. It is also known as Nanjing Children’s Hospital of Nanjing Medical University and Jiangsu Red Cross Children’s Hospital. The hospital has 1,400 beds and every year it has 1,707,000 outpatient visits, 54,800 inpatient admissions, and 18,400 surgeries. Currently the hospital has 1,729 employees, including 181 senior experts, 6 doctoral supervisors, 30 supervisors for MS students, 9 professors and 25 associate professors. Among them, 47 people have doctoral degrees and 260 have master’s degrees.

  The hospital has a complete range of specialties, covering all fields of child healthcare. Its Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology is a national key clinic specialty. The Department of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery is a key medical discipline of Jiangsu Provincial Project of “Promoting the Health Service through Science and Education”. The Department of Pediatric Nephrology is an innovation team of Jiangsu Provincial Project of “Promoting the Health Service through Science and Education”. The Department of Children’s Health Protection is a Jiangsu key discipline of maternal and child heath. The hospital also has 7 provincial key clinical specialties (pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, Neonate Medical Care Center, pediatric respiratory medicine, pediatric nephrology, pediatric surgery (including general surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, neonatal surgery, urology, burn surgery, and plastic surgery), emergency medicine, pediatric vasculocardiology) and 6 municipal key clinical specialties (pediatric neurology, pediatric hematology & oncology, pediatric endocrinology, otolaryngology, anaesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine). The hospital also serves as Jiangsu Diagnosis and Treatment Center for CHD in Children, the unit attached to Jiangsu Medical Service Quality Control Center (Neonate Medical Care Center, Dept. of Pediatric Surgery), and Jiangsu Training Base of Clinical Nurse Specialists for Acute and Critical Pediatric Illnesses.

  In the hospital there are also a post-doctoral research center, provincial centers of special diagnosis and treatment, Jiangsu Emergency Center for Infants, Jiangsu Intervention Center for Low Birth Weight Infants, Nanjing Sino-US Research Center for CHD in Children, Nanjing Rehabilitation Technique Instruction Center for Children with Cerebral Palsy, and Nanjing Pediatrics Research Institute.

  With excellent technical capacity, the hospital has carried out many cutting edge diagnostic and treatment techniques and highly difficult surgeries and it has formed its own specialty distinctions and advantages. The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery carries out over 1,000 child CHD surgeries every year and the success rate is above 98%. The youngest patient for such surgery is only 17 hours old. For the severe CHD - tetralogy of Fallot, the department made a national record of no death for 155 consecutive cases. The Neonate Medical Care Center admits 5,000 neonates with severe illnesses every year. The center once successfully saved the life of a 700g fetus in its 25th week of pregnancy. The center leads the country in its success rate of medical emergency and the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
